West Virginia was a part of the state of Virginia. However, it was geographically separated by mountains. In 1861 and 1862, during the Wheeling Conventions, the people of present-day West Virginia voted to seceed from Virginia once it had seceeded from the Union and President Abraham Lincoln recognized the 35th state which was formally formed on 20 Jun 1863. West Virginia was one of two states formed during the Civil War and was the only "state" to seceed from another Confederate State.
