UNDERSTANDING THE CATALOG ENTRIES -
SIGS Holdings Catalog entries are arranged the same way as the Family History Library Catalog - TOPICS appear first, followed by LOCALITIES. An example: in the CANADA Collection, general topics like GAZETTEERS and EMIGRATION and IMMIGRATION are followed by individual Canadian Provinces. In the US Collection, general topics appear first, followed by individual states; each state's resources are further divided into TOPICS and COUNTIES.
Here's a typical line in the catalog - this is from the CANADA Collection, Prince Edward Island Province
TRACING RESOURCE TITLE / CONTENT CALL # FIND
QUEENS Our People: Covehead PEI CPE-05 BR 1
TRACING: the TOPIC or CATEGORY of the resource (some titles have more than one TOPIC). The TRACING for this title tells us that the county is "QUEENS".
TITLE/CONTENT: the TITLE may be shortened to fit the space; sometimes a CONTENT note is included. In this example, "Our People: Covehead PEI" is the actual title of the book.
CALL #: for most resources, this is the LETTER plus NUMBER CODE that appears on the spine of the resource. In our example, CPE-05 tells us that this is the CANADIAN collection, province of PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, resource number 5.
FIND : the ROOM in the Humble House Library where the resource can be found; LR - Living Room, DR - Dining Room, BR 1- Front Bed Room, BR 2 - Back Bed Room. If the FIND column says "ASK", the resource must be retrieved by a staff member.
Please remember - A good library is a dynamic thing, constantly changing, constantly improving to better serve the needs of the genealogical community. Consequently, the book, non-print media and periodical collections at Humble House are always being reevaluated, rearranged and renumbered. Please be patient if you can't find a particular resource "where the catalog says it's supposed to be". If all else fails, ASK A LIBRARIAN!
HOLDINGS CATALOG UPDATES -
New titles are added regularly to the collection. The off-line version of the Holdings Catalog ("The Big White Notebook" Version) found in the front room at Humble House is usually updated first.
Throughout this online version, you will be reminded to check the WHAT'S NEW page, which should be fairly current.
