The Dying Redcoat, composed by a British sergeant mortally wounded on Manhattan Island in 1776, became popular amongst the Americans because of the song's sympathies with the colonials, revealed in the final stanza: Fight on America's noble sons, Fear not Britannia's thundering guns; Maintain your cause from year to year, God's on your side, you need not fear. The story of the song and its lyrics may be found at the site of Lesley Nelson-Burns.
