STRONG, James Reed

Services to celebrate the life of James Reed “Jimmy” Strong will be held in the parlor of First Methodist Church of Carthage at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2003.

Jimmy was born July 21, 1920, to James Garrison Strong and Willie Belle Boynton Strong in Carthage. He died Sunday, April 27, 2003.

After graduating from Carthage High School in 1937, he received a bachelor of arts degree in government and economics as well as his law degree from the University of Texas. In 1942, he volunteered to join the U.S. Air Force and was trained as a glider pilot and in military facilities administration. He served in England and France.

Jimmy is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Betty Jay Van Sandt Strong, also from Carthage, and his three children, John Strong and his wife, Marilu, of Orizaba, Mexico, Janet Strong Fuller and her husband, Andy Fuller, of British Columbia and Michael Strong and his wife, Elizabeth, of Austin. He adored his seven grandchildren, Paul, James, John, Emily, Jay Paul, Beverly and Timothy Strong. He is also survived by his sister, Kathryn Strong Clark and her husband, Ed, of Carthage; a brother, Jack Strong and his wife, Nelda, of Longview; and a niece and five nephews and their families.

A successful attorney for more than 40 years, Jimmy served as county attorney for Panola County; was a member of the Long, Strong, Jackson and Strong Law Firm; and concluded his career serving 26 years as the regional counsel for the U.S. Postal Service for the southwestern region of the United States.

The family suggests that memorials be made to Greater Hospice of Longview or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Rader Funeral Home of Longview is in charge of arrangements.
