Funeral
services for Ivory Allen, 95, of Carthage were under the direction
of Black’s Carthage Funeral Home.
Mrs. Allen died on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001 at East Texas
Medical Center in Carthage following a lengthy illness.
Graveside
services for Alyne Elliott Bennett, 77, of Austin, formerly of the
Reeves Community, were held on Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in the
Reeves-McMillan Cemetery in the Logan Community of Panola County.
The Rev. Don Cocklin officiated.
Arrangements were under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral
Home. She died on
Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001 in Austin.
Born
on Dec. 13, 1923 in the Reeves Community of Panola County, she was
the daughter of Horace David and Ira Duke Elliott.
She attended school in Panola County and Carthage and
graduated from nursing school in Houston.
She married Herbert Dewitt Freeman in 1957 and he preceded
her in death in 1968. She
later married Robert Bennett who also preceded her in death in 1978.
She had been employed as a nurse at Westminister Manor in
Austin and enjoyed quilting, gardening and cooking.
She was devoted to her family.

include her son and daughter-in-law Robert and Kristi Freeman of
Cedar Park; brothers and sisters-in-law Jimmy and Floread Elliott of
the Reeves Community and Travis H. and Polly Elliott of Hemphill;
sister Vicki Roberts of Carthage; grandsons Bobby Freeman and
Michael Scott Freeman both of Cedar Park; and a host of friends.
Funeral
services for Malvin Chandler, 80, of Hermitage AR, father of
Carthage resident Tommy Chandler, were held on Monday, Feb. 5, 2001,
at Frazer’s Funeral Home Chapel in Warren AR.
The Revs. David Smith and Wayman Mann officiated.
Burial followed in Outlaw Cemetery in Sumpter under
the direction of Frazer’s Funeral Home.
He died on Feb. 3, 2001 at Bradley County Medical Center in
Warren AR.
Born
Aug. 11, 1920 in Rosston AR, he was the son of the late George
Clifton and Myrtle Blair Chandler.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and was
rewarded with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medals, Victory
Ribbons, Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon and European-African-Middle
East Theater Campaign Ribbon. He
was a tank driver in the Rhineland and Northern France Campaign.
Chandler
married Alameda Savage on May 26, 1947.
He was a retired carpenter with 60 years of work, a charter
member of Hillside Baptist Church and a member of Saline Baptist
Church. He was preceded
in death by his brothers, Burton Chandler, Willis Chandler, Willard
Chandler, L.C. Chandler, Bobby Chandler and John William Chandler;
also by his sister Alice McKinney.
Survivors
include his wife Alameda Savage Chandler of Hermitage; sons Jerry
Chandler of Bearden AR, Tommy Chandler of Carthage and Larry
Chandler of Camden AR; daughters Phyllis Kay Davis of Junction City
AR and Linda Fay Mullins of Bearden AR; brothers Harold Chandler of
Memphis TN and Charles Chandler of Warren AR; sister Pauline Wade of
Tyler; 15 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

July 26, 1913 in Center, she was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson
and Ida Eugenia (Hodges) Driggers.
She was a homemaker and member of First Untied Methodist
Church in Timpson. She was preceded in death by her husband Milburn Darnell who
died in 1991.

at Broussard’s Mortuary Chapel in Nederland.

Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Groves under
the direction of Broussard’s Mortuary.
She died on Wednesday, March 10, 1999 in Nederland.
Born
in Center, she was the daughter of Ira and Rosa Lee Greer Bell.
She had been a resident of Port Arthur for 60 years before
her death. She was a
homemaker.

services for Mrs. Minnie Harkless, 75, of Beckville, were held at
11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, 1979 at Bethel Methodist Church in
Beckville with the Rev. John H. Hunt officiating.
Burial followed in Bethel Cemetery in Beckville under the
direction of Black’s Funeral Home of Carthage.
Mrs.
Harkless died Wednesday morning, Sept. 26, 1979 at Panola Nursing
Home in Carthage. She
was born on Sept. 13, 1904 in Beckville and was the daughter of
James Booty and Viola Green Booth.
She was a member of Bethel Methodist Church.
Survivors
include her sister, Mrs. Sidney (Eula May) Adams of Beckville and
two brothers, Vince Booty and James Booty both of Dallas; and a host
of nieces and nephews.

MAE HARRISON
Funeral
services for Lola Mae Harrison, 89, of Victoria, formerly of Panola
County, were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001 at Ebenezer
United Methodist Church in Panola County.
The Rev. John Cheney officiated and burial followed in Walton
Cemetery under the direction of The Lipsey Family Funeral Home.
She died on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 at Retama South Nursing
Home in Victoria.
Born
on April 19, 1911 in Panola County, she was the daughter of Andrew
Franklin and Sarah Elizabeth Copeland Cockrell.
She married Richard Benjamin Harrison on Sept. 17, 1927.
He preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 1979.
In 1980 she moved to Victoria moving there from Panola
County. She was a
member of the Methodist Church in Victoria.
Survivors
include her son and daughter-in-law Don and Peggy Harrison of Conway
AR; daughter Nellwyn Fern Bailey of Victoria.

Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001 at Bethel CME Church in Beckville.
Burial was in Bethel Cemetery on FM 124 E, near

She died on Wednesday, March 10, 1999 at Briarcliff Nursing
Home.
Born
on June 3, 1914 in Panola County, she was the daughter of L.D. and
Dovie Tuttle Mangham. She
was a lifelong resident of Carthage and Panola County and was a
loving mother, grandmother and homemaker.
She was a member of First Baptist Church and was preceded in
death by her husband Troy Jones who died Jan. 16, 1995.
Survivors
include her sons and daughters-in-law Orville and Joaon Jones of
Dallas and Clayton and Suzanne Jones of Plano; sisters Margie
Pickron of Carthage and Lula B. Williams of Corpus Christi; eight
grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

W. LOLLY, SR.
Funeral
services for Woodrow W. Lolley, Sr. 79, of Gary were held on
Saturday, March 13, 1999 at Jimerson Funeral Home Chapel.
The Rev. Leon Veazy officiated.
Burial followed at Clayton Cemetery under the direction of
Jimerson Funeral Home. He
died on Thursday, March 11, 1999 at Lagniappe Hospital in
Shreveport.
Born
May 22, 1919 in Eros LA, he was the son of John Russell and Bessie
Roberts Lolley. He
worked for 32 years with United Gas Pipeline Company and was a
member of Mt. Enterprise Baptist Church.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having participated in the
Battle of Attu in 1943. He
married the late Eloise Moreau in 1946. After her death in 1951, he met and married Edna Belle
Collins in 1952. After
retiring in 1975, they moved to Lake Murvaul in Gary.
Lolley
was preceded in death by his parents; brothers John Lolley of Idaho,
Kerry of Eros LA and R.T. and J.C. Lolley of West Monroe LA; his
first wife Eloise; a son Skip of Mariettta GA and his second wife
Belle of Gary.
Survivors
include his sons and daughters-in-law Robert and Janice Whitman Jr.
of Austin, Cleve and Eileen Lolley of Gary and Curtis Lolley of
Bossier City LA; daughters and sons-in-law Cheri and Scott Smith of
Houston and Pam and Troy Blackmon of Crockett; daughter-in-law
Martha Lolley of Marietta GA; sister Margie Alice of Anniston AL;
brother Bobby Gene Lolley of Winnsboro LA; six grandchildren and

services for Geraldine Allen Mangham, 80 of Beckville, were held on
Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Rick Tate officiated and burial followed in Walton
Cemetery under the direction of Hawthoorn Funeral Home.
She died on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001 in Longview.
Born
Dec. 28, 1920 in the Grandview Community of Rusk County, she was the
daughter of William Alonzo and Nora Pool Allen.
She completed Grandview Community School and married Ollie D.
Mangham on May 27, 1945. They
celebrated more than 50 years of marriage before his death in 1996.
Mrs.
Mangham was a homemaker who also worked in the fields and farmed.
She was a member of Allison Chapel Methodist Church.
She was a Dallas Cowboy fan and a devoted Democrat.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Naomi Kay Mangham;
eight sisters and four brothers.
Survivors
include her sons and daughters-in-law Allen and Brenda Hill of
Longview, Johnny and Susie Hill of Hornbeck LA and Tony and Donna
Hill of Palestine; daughter and son-in-law Delilah and George Henley
of Sherman; 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; numerous
nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001 at the Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel.

City Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral
Home. She died on
Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2001 in Pasadena
Born
Jan. 28, 1899 in Gary, she was the daughter of Andrew Barkley and
Mary Amanda Alexander Nutt. She
attended Mt. Bethel schools and married Earl Irvin Mayfield on Sept.
9, 1917. They
celebrated 62 years of marriage before his death in 1979.
She was employed as a seamstress in a clothing store in the
1950’s and was a member of First Baptist Church in Carthage. She
was a member of the Fidelity Sunday school class and enjoyed
gardening and seeing things grow.
She was a devoted mother and grandmother who lived her
family. She was
preceded in death by her brothers, Andrew, Ozzie, Warren and Fred
Nutt; sisters Mary Graves, Maude Tix and Ouida Walker; children,
Millard and Michael Mayfield and her husband.
Survivors
include her son and daughter-in-law Vernon and Virginia Mayfield of
Houston; daughter and son-in-law Tommie Ruth and Homer Robbins of
Monrovia CA; sister Zettie Duke of Lufkin; 10 grandchildren;
numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and a
host of friends.
Her
grandsons and great grandsons served as her pallbearers.

services for Richard John “Rick” Mertens, 71, of Carthage, were
held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, 1999 at Shady Grove Baptist
Church in Deberry. The Rev. Bruce Head officiated.
Mertens who died on Thursday, March 11, 1999, was cremated.
Arrangements were under the direction ofo Hawthorn Funeral
Home.
Born
on Feb. 26, 1928 in Harlan, Iowa, he was the son of Stephanis Joseph
and Elizabeth Holler Mertens. He
spent most of his life in Bossier City and was retired from the
United States Air Force after serving more than 20 years at
Barksdale Air Force Base. He then wroked in motel maintenance in Austin and was a
Bronze Life Member of the U.S. Judo Association where he held a red
and white belt in Judo and a black belt in Karate.
He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy Mertens and a
sister.
Survivors
include his son and daughter-in-law Otis Alan and Kim Mertens of
Leesville LA; daughters and sons-in-law Mary and Donnie Beason of
Deberry, Martha and Steve Jordan of Shreveport, and Barbara and
Lonnie Durr of Marthasville LA; stepsons Dr. Dean Robinson of
Shreveport and Christopher Robinson of Austin; step daughter Leslie
Robinson-Fulliton and husband Bill of Memphis TN; brother Jerry

services for George “G.P.” Moore, 85, of Carthage were held at 2
p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001 at First Baptist Church in Carthage.
The Revs. Jerry Burnaman and Allen Tilley officiated. Burial followed in Odd Fellows Cemetery in
Carthage under the direction of The Lipsey Family Funeral Home.
He died on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001 at East Texas Medical
Center in Carthage.
Born
June 19, 1915 in Sibley LA, he was the son of William Turner and
Emily Elizabeth King Moore. He
was a retired mechanic with Pippen Motor Company and was a member of
First Baptist Church in Carthage for 46 years where he taught the
adult men’s Sunday School class and led the devotional for the
adult department for many years.
He was married Sallie Moore (the former Dorothy Louise
Lazarus) for 63 years.
Prior
to moving to Carthage in 1955, he was a member of the Minden LA fire
department and rescue squad. “Mr.
George” as he was affectionately known was an avid fisherman,
football and baseball fan.
Survivors
include his wife Sallie Moore of Carthage; sons and daughters-in-law
Garland and Pat Moore of Waco and Sammy and Frances Lovett Moore of
Flower Mound; daughter and son-in-law Susan and Nogie Lee Jones of
Burleson, grandchildren and their spouses Alan Moore and Michael and
Paula Moore all of Denver CO, Jodi and Randy Bratchen and Kristi and
Jon Williamson all of Arlington, Jill and Aaron Jacobs and Seth
Jones all of Burleson; seven great grandchildren, numerous nieces
and nephews and a host of friends.

died on Thursday, March 11, 1999 in Carthage.
Born
Nov. 20, 1905 in Shelby County, she was the daughter of Ben and
Effie Mealer Ingram. She
was reared in the Baptist faith and spent much of her life in
Carthage, coming here in 1938.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, quilting and
crocheting. She was
preceded in death by husbands Richard Brady Ross and Linus Liverman;
sons Bennie Liverman and James Richard Liverman; daughter Bradie
Weaver; brothers Van Clifford, Earnest and Justice Ingram and
grandson George Robert Ross II.
Survivors
include her son and daughter-in-law George and Marie Ross of
Carthage; sister Henrietta Shaffer of Illinois; grandchildren and
their spouses Brenda and David White, Melinda and David Hummadi and
Mike Ross all of Carthage, Bennie Liverman of Waco, John and Betty
Frizzell of Sebring FL, Terri and Scotty Clark of Nacogdoches and
Derrel Ann and Robert Schultz of Brenham.

surviving Ross are her 10 great grandchildren, and niece Gerry and

Oct. 21, 1907 in Rusk County, she was the daughter of William Riley
and Kathrine Naomi Dove Brown.
She had lived most of her life in Panola County, having lived
her married life in the Delray Community.
She was a homemaker, a member of the Delray Sewing Club and
played the piano at church for many years.
She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John
Tom Ross; three sisters and two brothers.
Survivors
include her sons, Willis Neal Ross of Shreveport, Eston Royce Ross
of Carthage and Dan Brown Ross of Beckville; daughter Jean Ross
Williamson of Carthage; nine grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren
and several nieces and nephews.
Her
grandsons and great grandsons served as her pallbearers.

services for Dollie Selman, 96, of Beckville, were held Friday, Feb.

Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, in a Longview nursing home.

Feb. 11, 1904 in Rusk County, she was the daughter of Jesse and Mary
Etta “Mollie” Garvin Brooks.
She and her late husband Elzie Edwin Selman were married in
1924. Living most of
her life in Panola County, she was a member of Union Arbor Baptist
Church in Beckville where she attended for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband;
sisters Lois Stokes and Lillie Stokes; and brothers George Brooks,
Rube Brooks and Steve Brooks.
Survivors
include her daughter Mary Barnett of Longview; granddaughter Diana
Langley of Cupertino CA; sisters-in-law Lida Stacener of Tatum and
Maggie Steffy of Longview; numerous nieces and nephews.

Born
on June 24, 1923 in Mooringsport LA, she was the daughter of W.B.
and Mary Marie Roe Hensley. She
served her country with the United States Navy W.R. during World War
II. She married Harvey
S. Summers on Oct. 3, 1946 and she owned and operated Mike’s
Beauty Shop for a number of years.
She
was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and was active with the
Campfire Girls and American Business Women’s Association.
She enjoyed dewing, working with ceramics and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother Zack
Hensley.

include her sons and daughters-in-law David and Jo Summers of
Carthage and Jimmy and Patricia Summers of
Waco; daughter Lynda Summer of Overton; brothers and

Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001 at his residence after a long illness.
Born
Jan. 4, 1941 in Panola County, he was a lifetime resident of
Carthage. Upon receiving his associate degree in Kilgore, he then
attended the University of Texas in Austin.
He owned and operated Carmen’s Nursery in Carthage and
served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
He was a member of Rehobeth United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Eloise
Taylor and his brother, Jackie Taylor.
Survivors
include his daughter and son-in-law Traci and Sunny Vandegriff of
Carthage; brothers-in-law Terry Barnett of Carthage and Don and June
Barnett of Longview; sisters-in-law Myrna and Tom Sullens and Nellie
and Herbert Allums all of Carthage; several nieces and nephews.

Bethlehem Baptist Church. Burial
will follow in the Holland Quarters Cemetery.

died on Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at Methodist Hospital in Houston.

Aug. 17, 1939 in Panola County, he was the son of the late Lester
and Lizzie Ware. He was
a retired metro driver.
