Chief Piomingo, for whom the chapter is named, was a Chickasaw Indian
who lived in West
Tennessee in the 1700's. On January 10, 1786, Chief Piomingo signed the
Treaty of Hopewell.
This treaty marked the beginning of official relations between the
Chickasaw nation and the United States. Chief Piomingo went to
Philadelphia for an audience with President Washington on July 11,
1794, and received a commission as an officer of the militia. He was
also presented with a document setting forth the boundaries of the
Chickasaw territory as described in the Nashville Conference of 1792.
The aging chief made his last public appearance in July of 1797. He
and William Colbert were successful in winning approval for the site
of a new fort - the present day Auction Square in Collierville, Tn.
