BAILEY

In order that I may continue my genealogical research of my Bailey ancestry, I need to determine some details of the Pickens County, S.C. area.  In the 1860 Census for Pickens County, there was an area known as White Hill.  After the 1868 split of Pickens which helped to create Oconee County, did White Hill remain with Pickens County or become part of Oconee?  The answer to this question will keep me on track with my research.

BARNES

We are looking for descendents and/or information on George H. Barnes (Born  1825) and Bethana  Herron Barnes(Born  1833). We know that Bethana was the daughter of Elizabeth Herron  and was from Walhalla,Oconee county, S.C. We believe George was from Rabun county,Georgia or perhaps Macon county, N.C..They had two daughters Hester Barnes born ( 01/1859) and married John Farley of  Robbinsville, Graham county, N.C. and Letha Belle Barnes who married A.P. "Alf" Barton
in Walhalla, Oconee county,S.C.. In the probate of George Barnes it mentions seven children so it is likely George was married prior to marrying Bethana Barnes in 1859. George served as a private in the Confederate Army and enlisted in Franklin County N.C. He died in 1868 and we would like to find the location of his grave   and any other info that would lead us to his parents or siblings.

SMITH - LONG - TONEY

The latest OPD CDROM has an excellent list of the ENG/VA/NC/SC Smiths descending from old christopher the teacher at University of Wm and Mary 1696 to 1716 or thereabouts. Most of what is shown there has been proven in documents derived from the government records. Good job! However the thrust to be so accurate and precise has thrown out as not proven or not yet proven children of John Buckner SMITH 1758 Rev war Vet who died in Oconee SC 1851. After living nearly a hundred years and still making babies after 60 years old we have thrown out several of the children who PROBABLY were his children but were not YET PROVEN. He may have had as many as 14 children or so it appears to be. That leaves me in a quandry because it has always LOOKED like Washington SMITH who lived near Long Creek [Pulaski township area] b. 1808 died 1860 married Elizabeth Betsy ??? [probably Toney] and had the following children: Elizabeth, Jemima 1835 probably + Long, James N. 1837, Colonel Toney 28 Aug 1840 + Burnetta Wilbanks? buried at Long Creek baptist under confederate cross, Marianne 22 Feb 1842, Frederick W. L. 27 Sep 1845, Margaret Peggy 20 Dec 1849, and William 4 June 1853..... looked like he was a son of John Buckner but just not yet proven. Can anyone out there prove the origin of this Washington SMITH? Any Toney or Long families have these connections? What clues do you have that this man was born into the John Buckner SMITH Family? Anything?

Charles C. Miller, bonedigr@concentric.net
