A photograph of the John Marion Craft family of Dark Corners Township, Anderson County, SC, taken in 1898
John Marion Craft (10/25/1825 - 7/22/1915), son of Anderson Craft and Lucy Alexander Craft of Elbert County, GA, ran Craft's Ferry across the Savannah River. He also operated one of the boats that carried cotton from Andersonville to Augusta, GA. His claim to nautical fame was that he piloted the boat that carried Henry W. Grady from his famous speach at Andersonville.
J. M. Craft's first wife, Nancy Gaines Craft, died during the Civil War. J. M. was granted a five-day furlough for the funeral. During the furlough, he married Louise Mauldin in order to have someone care for the motherless children. He and Louise enjoyed a long and fruitful marriage themselves. John M. is buried in the New Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Elbert County, GA.
