In the General Sessions, October Court 1814. We the Grand Jurors of Pendleton District present as a grievance before the honorable court the frequent violations of the sacredness of the divine institution of Marriage throughout the state, and particular[ly] in this district by men and women living together and having issue without marriage, and by men & women leaving their lawful wives, or husbands, and living in a criminal way with others, which tends to dishonor religion, defy its injunctions, and corrupt the minds and morals of the young and rising generations and is destructive to the peace and tranquility of families and degrading tot he community that tolerates such growing evils, and as it is conceived that the laws of this State are not sufficient effectually to prevent such dangerous, and growing evils we would therefore most earnestly entreat that this presentment be laid before the legislature of this state and that they pass a law more effectually to prevent such dangerous and growing evils in our country. 2. We also present as a grievance that Jurors are compelled to render their services, frequently a week at a time, on their own expense and not unfrequently without money and are often under the necessity of exposing themselves to the inclemency of the weather, by camping out not being able to procure comfortable nourishment or lodging for themselves; and it is to be recollected that while the poor Jurors are rendering their services to their several Districts and to the country without support, and is distress all the offices required by our system of Jurisprudence have ample rewards. We do therefore request that this presentment be also laid before the legislature and that they take the same into consideration and grant such relief as they in their wisdom shall think proper.
