In 1897 Puerto Rico's capital city, San Juan had just 27,020 inhabitants. At that time San Juan was divided into 5 districts, that were further subdivided into barrios -- the eqivalent of a political ward in the United States. The 1st District was comprised of the following barrios: Bayaja, Mercado and Catedrál. The 2nd  District included San Cristóbal and San Francisco. The 3rd District had only one Barrio, Marina. The 4th also had one barrio, Puerta de Tierra. The 5th had the most number of barrios, Santurce, Carretera Ceboruco, Bayola, Machuchal, Condado and Punta de las Arenas. At that time the city's chief official was the Alcalde- Presidente, don Antonio Ahumada y Gutíerrez.
