On December 28, 1847 Linn County was formed from Champoeg (now Marion) County. The boundaries were altered in 1851 and 1854 with the creation of Lane and Wasco Counties. The county seat was originally located in Calapooia, but in 1851 Albany was named county seat. A election in 1856 reaffirmed Albany as the official county seat.A variety of flora and fauna occur in Linn County. Fauna include mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles. and unclude a variety of oaks and conifers as well as other species such as salix sessilifolia. The Rough-skinned Newt is a common amphibian occurring in the oak woodlands of the County. When wagon trains first came to this area the Indians were friendly, helping settlers find water and food, and from horseback leading wagon trains across the safest ford of a river. Unlike Indians from East Oregon, and around the Rogue River area of South Oregon, the these tribes in general did not war against the whites. Most of the Indians of this area were removed to the Warm Springs reservation further east. TTTP National is a genealogy group dedicated to providing free genealogy to researchers in all 50 states.
