Esther J. Ekey Macmillan
Esther J. Ekey Macmillan, retired elementary school teacher having taught in the Edison Local School District, Jefferson County, with 28 years of services. She was 88.
A resident of Vancouver, Washington, formerly of Stratton, Ohio, she was born March 8, 1910 in Stratton, the daughter of the late John and Emma Dunlap Ekey.
She was a member of Empire United Methodist Church; a member of Hollow Rock Camp Ground Association-Jefferson County, Ohio: and enjoyed playing the piano and taught quilting classes.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James M.; a brother, Wilbur Ekey. Surviving are two sons, Tome of Seattle, Washington, and James of San Mateo, California; a daughter, Joyce Macmillan of Vancouver: a sister, Mary Ekey Robinson of Canton, Ohio.
Friends received from 11 a.m. Saturday until time of services at 1 p.m. at Clarke Funeral Home, 302 Main St., Toronto, with the Reverent Kenneth Moody-Arndt officiating. Interment in Sugar Grove Cemetery, near Empire.

Leamon W. Martin
Leamon Wherry Martin peacefully passed away Wednesday, (February 6, 1929), at 7:30 a.m. on Wills Creek, at th age of 85 years, after an illness of one week, having suffered a stroke. He was born in Steubenville, December 3, 1843. He was the son of James and Melissa Ann Martin. He came of Quaker parentage, who were among the first settlers to the Ohio Valley. His parents died while he was yet a boy. His first employment was in the old cotton factory at the foot of Washington Street. After the death of his parents, he was reared on the farm of Emanuel Hottel in Island Creek township.
Here he spent his life until 1871, when he embarked in the butchering business, which he followed successfully until 1881. In that year, he became a dealer in ice. In 1882, Hugh H. Brown became a partner in the business. In 1884, they moved their establishment to Wills Creek where he had lived ever since. He started in business with small capital, but his good business methods enabled him to build up a large business, which he carried on for fifty years.
He was an active member of the First Christian Church and he was one who loved and served his Master his entire life, until prevented by ill health. He was a faithful and thorough christian influencing his entire family to follow his leadership in the work of the above named church.
He was married March 18, 1875, to Sarah, daughter of Mar. and Mrs. Allen Priest of Hancock County, W. Va. He leaves to survive his loss his wife and these children: Mrs. Jennie Bauman of Granville Center, Pa; Mrs. Myrtle Reithmiller of Martins Ferry; Harry, minister of the Church of Christ at Orviston, Pa; Albert, Hugh, Vern, and William of this city, besides twenty grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and also a half sister, Mrs. J. B. Gamble of this city.
This obituary is of my great grandfather, Leamon W. Martin of Alikanna, Jefferson County, Ohio.

Mrs. S. J. Martin
Mrs. Sarah Jane Martin died at her home on Wills Creek on Saturday (June 8, 1929) at 1:15 a.m. Her death followed eleven weeks of illness after a stroke of paralysis, the second stroke coming on Thursday night. Her husband, L.W. Martin died February 6, 1929. She was 75 years of age on August 9, 1928.
Mrs. Martin was born on the Half Moon Farm, the daughter of Allen and Mary J. Yocum Priest.
These children survive: Albert, at home, Mrs. Jennie Bauman at Granville Summitt, Pa.; the Rev. Harry Martin, at Orbiston, Pa.; Hugh, Verne and William of this city, Mrs. Myrtle Reithmiller of Martins Ferry, Ohio. These brothers and sister survive: Mrs Elizabeth Sambrooke of Melville, N.J.; Stephen Priest, of Wenatchee, Washington; Valley Preist of Marshall, Oklahoma; John Priest of Mineral Ridge, Ohio.
Mrs. Martin had been a member of the First Christian Church since her early girlhood and she was a devoted mother and an excellent Christian woman.

Joseph E. Maxwell (Feb. 9th 1916- 31st Dec. 2009)
Maxwell, Joseph E. age 92 [92 yr. 10 mo. 22 days] of Canton Oh. Joe died Wednesday in the Aultman Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Mingo Junction, Ohio to the late David G. & Ina R. (Kline) Maxwell. Joseph was most known for being an amateur pianist; he was retired from National Steel Company in Weirton, West Virginia, where he worked as an electronic engineer for 33 years. He was a Morris Code Operator at
the Pentagon during WWII., a Boy Scout Leader and church organist for many years. Proceeded in death by his 2nd wife, Pauline E. (Eft) Maxwell and two brothers; David M. & Howard C. Maxwell, two sisters, Caroline [Percy] Fuller and Alice [Wm.] Christie. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Willam M. (Donna May) Tivener of Mansfield, Ohio and Mrs. Larry (Carol Ann) Hefling of Murray Nebraska, two sons, William Joseph
Maxwell of Lakeland, Florida and J. Kevin Maxwell of North Canton. Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and 2nd great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be Monday, 5:00 P.M. in the Spiker-Foster-Shriver Funeral Home 4817 Cleveland Ave. N. W. with Pastor Phil Di Sabatino officiating. Friends may call Monday from 3-5 P.M.
Joe will be buried in the Fort Steuben Cemetery, Wintersville, Oh. Next to his wife Pauline who died, 09 November 2001 N. W. Canton, Oh. The daughter of Henry M. & Louise Scott Eft of Jefferson Co. Oh. The parents of J. Kevin Maxwell.
Joe married first to Dorothea Phyllis Burdette, b. 28 August 1923 Reedy, Roane Co. WV. Died 9 Jan 2001 Wood Co. WV. They had three children: Donna, William & Carol Maxwell.
Joe was a descendant of William & Sarah Maxwell who came from Scotland to Ireland then to America. William came to Ohio with his family, his son Charles owned land in Cross Creek, Jeff. Co. patented in 1806. He built the first two story brick home in Wayne Township which has been restored and now called the Mill Creek Inn, operated by Roger Pyles, a retired teacher from Steubenville schools.
Joe was a devoted and loving father and had many friends he spent most of his life in Jefferson Co. before moving to North Canton, Oh. He loved playing his piano which he played the entire morning before he became ill. He worked on cross words, read book in German and other languages, worked on his Morris key machine to keep in practice. When he entered a World contest for Morris key, he said
he came in second due to the fact his machine jammed. He got his first computer at age 86 and burned his own Music CD’s from the electronic piano he bought at age 89. On his 90th Birthday his party was attended by the Mayor of Mansfield, Ohio, Lydia Reed. His children brought in a Bag Piper to play at his birthday party all of his favorite songs, Amazing Grace and others.
He loved listening to his Ham Radio and still carried his first Ham License in his billfold dated November, 29th 1933. He loved helping his oldest daughter, Donna research their families, and was a world of information on the Jefferson County area. He was very healthy and able to get around on his own up till the day he contacted a slight case of pneumonia and left us to “Go Home” to be with his
loved ones who had long passed before him.
He asked his grand daughters to tell everyone when he passed, that he was “Irish and loved to laugh and make people laugh”. He was very proud of his Scott-Irish heritage. And he had in his possession Maxwell Plaid Cloth which he had made into a tie for himself, the Hat Badge and Crest of the Maxwell Clan of Scotland. His loving and caring ways will be remembered by many and especially his children.

George R. Mayhew, 56, of 563 South Fourth Street, died late Monday in
the Ohio Valley Hospital where he had been a patient nine days.
Born in Cadiz, Mr. Mayhew had resided in Steubenville since 1909, and
was employed as a railroad engineer with the Pennsylvania Railroad. He
as a member of Calvary Methodist Church and the Brotherhood of Railroad
Engineers.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mabel Mayhew, two daughters, Mrs. Dorothey
Miller of 565 South Fourth Street, and Mr. Elwood Selsor of Columbus, a
son, William of Buena Vista Blvd, three grandchildren, a sister, Mrs.
Charles Brownlee of Highland Park, Michigan, and two brothers, Fred of
Chicago and James of Cheyenne, Wyo.
Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the McClave Funeral Home,
611 North Fouth Street. Rev Harold WIlliams will officiate. Burial will
follow in Union Cemetery.(Herald Star June 1, 1948)

Mabel Mayhew
Steubenville: Mabel Leona Mayhew, 96, of Leesburg, Florida, formerly of
Steubenville, Ohio, died January 7, 1990 at Ocala, Florida. She was
a member of the Buena Vista Methodist Church.
Surviving are daughter Betty K. Selsor of Leesburg, eight
grandchildren,and 20 great grandchildren.
She was born October 21, 1893 in Steubenville, the daughter of the late
William J. and Mary Viola Hoover Keys. She also was preceded in death by
her husband George R. Mayhew, in 1948; a daughter Dorothey Oller, in
1956; and a son William Mayhew in 1976.
Friends may call at the Mclave-Chandler-Mills Funeral Home, downtown
Steubenville 2-4 and 7-9. Wednesday; services there at 2 p.m.on
Thursday; the Rev. Dave C. Hostetler; Union Cemetery.

Mary McCue
Carrollton--Mrs. Mary Margaret McCue, 85, of 390 Raley Ave., died Sunday morning in her home following a length illness.
She was a retired telephone operator for General Telephone and was formerly employed by Ohio Bell. Mrs. McCue was a member of the Baptist Church of Bergholz, the Orange Lodge, Order of Eastern Star, Leesville; and the Royal Neighbors Lodge.
Surviving are a foster daughter Betty Mairie Hendrickson at home; and a brother, Josiah D. Ekey of Mt. Vernon.
Mrs. McCue was born Aug. 20, 1889, in Tiltsonville, a daughter of the late Charles M. and Ruth Margaret Akins Ekey. A brother Charles Dayton Ekey preceded her in death.

Mrs E. G. McCullough Dies at Hospital
Mrs. Anna E. McCullough, 83, widow of Edwin G. McCullough, native and life long resident of the Fernwood district5, Jefferson county died at 6:10 p.m., Wednesday, July 24, 1947, at the Ohio Valley Hospital, after having suffered a heart attack in her home the day before.
She was the daughter of Edward T. and Serena Crawford Ekey, and was born Feb 15, 1864 in Jefferson county. She was a member of the Bloomfield M.E. church and the WSCS of the church. Her parents were early settlers of Jefferson county. Mrs. Mc Cullough was a woman of good Christian charter and had many sterling traits Surviving are a son, Howard S. McCullough, at the home. Three sisters, Miss Mary Ekey, Scio, O, and Miss Ida Ekey, Wellsville, O.
Also surviving are a niece, Mrs. W. W. Gregory of Los Angeles, Ca., and two nephews, Edward J. Ekey and Oliver Ekey, Steubenville Ohio. Her husband died five years ago. Friends may call the the McClave funeral home. (Interment in Long’s Cemetery)

Edwin Garret McCullough, a life long resident of Jefferson county died at his home near Fernwood, Thursday at 7:00 p.m. His death follows an illness of complicated ailments. He had been in failing health for several years and was bedfast for over two years.
He was born February 28, 1864, the son of Joseph and Mary J. Brown McCullough, both deceased. He was married to Anna Ekey, 25 October 1893.
His widow survives with one son, Howard. Three children died in infancy. He bcame a member of Long’s M.E. church in early boyhood. When the church was abandoned he transferred his membership to Bloomingdale M.E. church, have served on the board of both churches

Monday, Feb, 1962, Scio, O--Howard Stanton McCullough, 65, died in his home in Scio after an illness of five months. He had resided in Scio with his aunts, Misses Mary and Ida Ekey, since 1948.
Mr McCullough was a member of the Scio Methodist church and the Harrison county Farm Bureau. He was formerly active in the Jefferson County Grange. Mr McCullough was a graduate of Steubenville Business College. He was born April 6, 1897 in Jefferson County, a son of the late Edwin and Anna Ekey McCullough. Friends my call at the Purviance Funeral Home in Scio after 7:00 p.m. tonight. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home The Rev. Mr. Roy Hillard will officiate. Burial in Long’s Cemetery, Fernwood, Ohio.

Massillon, Ohio--Robert J. McDermitt of 2830 Connecticut Ave., SE, Massillon, former resident of Steubenville, died Wednesday in Massillon.
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Martha McDermitt; a daughter, Miss Diane McDermitt, at home; a son, Robert J. McDermitt Jr., and a daughter, Mrs. Betty Belle Rae, both in California; five stepchildren; a sister, Mrs.. Charles (Mary Jane) Talbott Sr., of Carrollton; four brothers, George McDermitt, Gallitzin McDermitt and William McDermitt, all of Canton and Wilford McDermitt of Steubenville and several grandchildren.
