James O. IRWIN


Death , yesterday claimed one of Steubenville's prominent citizens when James O. Irwin, well known retired manufacturer, passed away at home, 412 North Third Street at 3:45 o'clock Monday afternoon following an illness of more than two years. Mr Irwin had been in failing health since 1920 but was not confined to his bed until three months ago whin he became gradually weaker until he passed peacefully away.

Mr. Irwin was born in New Phiadelphia, O., October 31, 1856 and would have been 66 years of age today. He was the son of Robert Johnson Irwin and Mary Irwin, both deceases. The family moved to this city when Mr. Irwin was but a year old and he pracitally spent his entire life in this community. He was educated at the Old Academy, then located on North Seventh Street. At a very young age he went in to the Means Foundry and Machine Company and learned the machinest trade. In 1877 he with William McDevitt and William Robinson founded the Franklin Machine Works an institution which he remained at the head of until 14 years ago when he retired. The business is at present in charge of his son.

In his younger days Mr. Irwin was affiliated with the United Presbyterian Church of this city. He was a man of quiet nature and of the home loving kind and his passing will be an occasion of much regret throughout this community and the family has the sympathy of a large circle of friends.

On July 18, 1883, he was united in marriage to Sarah McCullough of this city, who surrives. He is survived by the following children Robert J., Stewart D., Edna E., James R. and George Wilburt, all of this city, and Frank Irwin of Hollidays Cove, W.Va.. One sister, Mrs.Mary B. O'Brien of Glendale, Calf. also survives.

Funeral services will be held Friday for Miss Edna E. Irwin, 83, of 632 Rosswell Ave. Miss Irwin died Tuesday morning in the Sunny Slope Nursing Home, Bowerston, Ohio, after a lengthy illness.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m., in the Cole Brothers Funeral Home with burial in Union Cemetery. Friend may call at the funeral home from 2-4 p.m., and 7-9 p.m., Thursday.

Miss Irwin formaly was a bookkeeper at Ohio Valley Hospital and before her retirement due to illness, she was bookkeeper at the Franklin Machine Shop.

She was born June 8, 1878, in Steubenville, a daughter of the late James O. and Sarah McCullough Irwin.

Miss Irwin was a charter member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and the Woman's Auxiliary of the church.

She leaves two brothers, James R. Irwin of Steubenville, executive secretary of the Masonic Temple Corp., and G. Wilbert Irwin of Wintersville. Contributed by: Emilie Ayers
