JACOB HAUSER, died at his residence at South Seventh street, Sunday morning at 4 o’clock. His funeral took place on Monday at 2 o’clock. he leaves a wife and six small children to mourn his death. Mr. Hauser with his family came here last fall from Pittsburgh expecting to get work at the glass works, but being disappointed, the family was forced to go to the poor house, where they remained until some two or three months ago, when the son got work at the glass house and the family came to the city to live with hopes that they might be able to get other employment. Mr. Hauser took sick and being a stranger among strangers their wants were not known until a few days ago; when it was ascertained that they were in a manner starving, with no beds nor bedding to protect them during the winter, the children barefooted and clothed in nothing but rages. The neighbors have contributed provisions and clothing that for the time being will be a relief, but some provision should be made for them in the future.

An Old Lady's Horrible Death

Mrs. Thomas Holmes, an old and highly respected resident of Fernwood, this county, met with a tragic death yesterday morning about 10 o'clock by falling into a grate fire and perishing before assistance reached her. Mrs. Holmes was in her 85th year and lived with her son Robert A. Holmes near the old Holmes mill. For several years she had been in poor health, mentally and physically, and a close watch had to be kept on her at all times in order that she might not suffer personal injury. Yesterday morning, however, the old lady evaded her watchers and going into a room where a bright fire burned in the grate fell head first into the flames. The odor of burning clothing attracted the attention of her son, who, on going into the room, found his mother a burning heap on the hearth. Life was already extinct, the poor woman's clothing having been burned from her body which presented a horrible sight. The carpet on which she partly lay was burning when Mr. Holmes made the awful discovery, and it was with some difficulty that the room was saved from destruction. The unfortunate lady was the widow of Thomas Holmes, who built and for years operated Holmes mills. She was the mother of Postmaster Hiram Holmes, of Fernwood, and a third son, Isaac, lives in Milwaukee. She was a life member of the Presbyterian Church, and enjoyed a large acquaintance in Cross Creek township. The funeral will take place Thursday at 10 o'clock from the Cross Creek Presbyterian Church.
