Departed this life, at his home in Richmond, this county, October 23, Robert
S. Dunbar, the third son of John and Eliza Dunbar, who were pioneer settlers
of Island Creek township, Mr. Dunbar was born September 23, 1819 and at the
age of nine years his father died, leaving a widow and six sons. His lot was
cast among strangers until he arrived at the age of maturity, at which time
he engaged in the transportation of produce by flat boat to points below on
the Ohio River. On April 12, 1844 he was united in marriage to Miss Martha
J. Rogers, of same township. He leaves a widow and seven children, 25
grandchildren and eight great-grand-children to morn his loss. The names of
his children living are John R., Mary C. and Mrs. S.M. Priest, of Alikanna;
Mrs Daniel Polen, of Wellsville; Mrs. G. W. Simmons, of Steubenville; Ross,
of Uhrichsville, and Mrs. John W. Brown or Ozark, Mo. His two sons dead are
Charles and Alonzo. He has been a professor of Christianity for 52 years.
In early life he united with the Methodist Church at Centre Chapel, and
thirty years ago he united with the Christian Church at Steubenville, at
which place he held his membership. In principles he was a Democrat, and
when his country made the call for defenders of the flag, he enlisted in Co.
G. 52 O.V.I. and in the service of same he received injuries which made him a
daily sufferer for over 30 years, and no one would ever hear him murmur or
complain. Being a man small in stature he was possessed of an iron
constitution, and never in his long life was known to be sick in bed until
his last sickness, which was four days. He was of a kind and jovial
disposition, which made him friends from the smallest child to those of his
own age. He was a loving and agreeable companion, kind and affectionate
father, and after an earthly pilgrimage of 78 years has returned to his
mother earth, leaving a character and reputation worthy for anyone to model
after. Funeral services were conducted at his late residence, Monday, 25th,
at 11 o'clock, by Rev. Slater, of the Christian Church, Steubenville,
assisted by Rev. Haverfield, of the M. E. Church, of Richmond. Members of
the G.A.R. acted as pall bearers. Internment took place at Union cemetery.
