George F. Cable


Wintersville--George D. "Pearce" Cable, 96, of Wintersville died Monday, December 29, 2003, at Trinity West. He was born in Steubenville, September 30, 1907, a son of the late Dan M. and Mary Elizabeth Pearce Cable. He retired from Weirton Steel Co. Research and Chemicle Dept. Pearce was a very active member of the Wintersville U.M. Church and United Methodist Mens where he served as chaplain for many years. He also was a member and past master of Pilgrim Lodge 691 F & AM and served as a Boy Scouts Master for 33 years. He served in Army Air Corps during WWII. Pearce was preceded in death by his wife, Leota Everson Cable on March 17, 2002, and one brother, Daniel McCook Cable. Surviving are his son, Charles W. Cable of Kent, Ohio and granddaughter Kate Cable of Knoxville, Tenn. Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of services at noon in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Manasseh Carns


Passed away in a good old age, Manasseh Carns of this city, aged 68 years. He was married to Margaret Phillips, who preceded him to the spirit land some four years since. He was born in Island Creek township, this county He leaves two daughters, Emma B., wife of Charles F. Canby, and Martha J. Carns of this city. He was a good citizen, highly appreciated for his many good and humane and benevolent characteristics, a consistent and faithful member of the Methodist Church, to which he was strongly attached, a kind and indulgent father, a good citizen, warmly and loyally attached to all the interests of his county, of his country's institutions, a man of integrity, honest and faithful to every obligation of Christian duty, and will ever be remembered as one of the most efficient workers, that have for their object the amelioration of mankind in the scale of human and Christian elvation and human progress.

PHILIP CARREL


"Proof was this day made in open court that Philip Carrel died in the service of the United States leaving wife Mary Carrel and nine children to wit John, Mary, Margaret, Joseph, Anthony, Catherine, Henry, Jane and Philip all heirs at law of the said Philip Carrel deceased - and that they are the only heirs of the said Carrel desceased."

Mrs. Blaine D. Carter Very sad news was conveyed to the many friends of Blaine D. Carter and family on Sunday of the death of his beloved wife, Alice Gill Carter, who entered into rest on Saturday at 12:05 midnight. Her death came after two years ailment with valvular heart trouble during which time she suffered very much, at times through with Christian resignation. On several occasions she was in the hospital for treatment and lately she seemed to be improving. On Friday however she took a turn for the worse and on Saturday night her sweet soul was called hence to be with the Master.The deceased was 28 years of age on July 24, 1914, and was the daughter of Mrs. Annie Gill, of Toronto. She was married to Mr. Carter five years ago and was a loving and devoted wife. her mother and her husband survive.The deceased was a menber of Westminster Church. Mrs. T. E. Chestnut Mrs T. E. Chestnut died at her home at Wellsburg, on Monday at 2:30 p.m. She had been ill for some time. She was born at Omaha, Georgia, September 15, 1858. Four children survive, Mrs. Mollie Long, George T., Morris, all of Steubenville and Mrs. L. O. Treadway, Columbus. Her body is at the Elliot Funeral Home. Steubenville Herald Star, December 27, 1932

Mary Cich


TORONTO - Mary K. Cich, 80, of Toronto, died Aug. 7, 1992, at 2:34 p.m. in St. John Medical Center.

Surviving are a son, Richard of Toronto; three daughters, Rosalene Cich of Wintersville; Mrs. Wesley (Helene) Karavish of Buena Vista, Va., and Mrs. James (Patricia) Ault of Wintersville; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was born Jan. 1, 1912, in Midland, Pa., a daughter of the late Otto and Rosie Somogie. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Morris "Red" Cich, in 1967; and a grandchild.

Friends may call at Clarke Funeral Home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday; blessing services there Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. followed by Funeral Liturgy with Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's church. Monsignor Roger Foys; Toronto Union Cemetery; wake services Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Morris Cich


TORONTO - Morris Cich, 59, of 1314 Franklin Ave., died Saturday in Ohio Valley Hospital, Steubenville.
Mr. Cich was employed as a tool and die maker. He was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church.
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Mary Cich; three daughters, Mrs. James (Rosalene) Vandruff of Toronto, Mrs. Wesley (Helene) Karavish of Fairfax, Va., and Mrs. James (Patricia) Ault of Wintersville; a son, Richard Cich of Toronto; six grandchildren; six sisters, Mrs. Vera Murray, Mrs. Mary Bilchak, Mrs. Anna McCarthy and Mrs. Martha Shimmel, all of Toronto; four brothers, Stanley Cich, Walter Cich, and Adam Cich, all of Toronto and Frank Cich of Wintersville.
Friends may call at the Clarke Funeral Home from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., today and Tuesday; Rosary there at 8 p.m., Tuesday; Requiem Mass Wednesday, 9:30 a.m., St. Joseph's R. C. Church; Rev. Fr. John Kolesar; Toronto Union Cemetery.

Mrs. Margaret [Athya] Close


Mrs. Margaret Close, 88, of 240 Woodridge Drive, Wintersville, died at home today of natural causes.

Mrs. Close was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Close in 1957.

She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Joseph A. (Ina) Schneider with whom she made her home; a son, John Close of Pittsburgh; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Cole Brothers Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday; services there at 1 p.m. Saturday; Dd. Ross Porter; Union Cemetery.

Falling Leaves

One of the pioneer Christian mothers, of Jefferson County, entered into rest, Wednesday, January 20th 1892, at 2pm. She was born near Hagerstown, Md., seventy-eight years ago, at the age of sixteen, she came to Jefferson county, with her parents, and settled near Somerset, about fifteen years ago her husband, George Close "anchored his soul in the haven of rest." Since his death, she has made her home with her son-in-law John R Dunbar, near Alikanna, where she died. She leaves three sons, Harrison, of Hammondsville, O., George, of Bowling Green, this county, Sylvester, Defiance county, O. She also has living two daughters, Mrs. John Wilson, Bowling Green, O.; Mrs. Maria J. Lewis, Wellsville, O. Three sons and one daughter, Sallie A., the wife of John R Dunbar, have reached the City of Many Mansions Bright, and have found rest in the shadow of His wings. She leaves twenty-five grandchildren and thirty-five great grand children. Mrs. Close was a good, earnest Christian woman. For over fifty years she has been a faithful member of the Christian Church, working in season and out of season for the success of the cause so near her heart. She was loyal to the blood-stained banner of Calvary, lived doing all the good she could to her own kindred and those about her to make life's burdens easy and light, and died in the full hope that: "Tho' I walk through the calley and the shadow, Yet the glory of the dawning I shall see, I shall list to the music over Jordan, Where my loved ones are waiting for me, Jordan will not harm me there in peace, in the calley, I know. Her remains will be taken to New Somerset for interment on the evening the Cleveland & Pittsburgh railroad tomorrow morning.

Charles Vernon Conaway, 69, a native of Jefferson County, Ohio, died Sunday about noon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Michelli, Muskingum St. Cadiz. He was born November 3, 1885, a son of the late David & Sarah Fellows Conaway. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lillie Conaway; two sons, Charles Lemoyne Conaway of Cadiz, and David Conaway of Lincoln Park, Mich.; three daughters, Mrs. Stanley Grajewski of Lincoln Park, Mrs. George Kramer of Philadelphia and Mrs. Michelli of Cadiz and a foster daughter, Mrs. Gerald Long of Rush Run, Oh. Friends are being received at the Gillespie Funeral Home where services will be conducted Tuesday at 7 pm. Final rites will be held Wednesday at 2 pm at the Hopewell Presbyterian Church followed by burial in the Hoepwell Cemetery.

David Conaway, 88 died at 4 am Friday at the home of his son, Vernon Conaway, north of Fairpoint, Oh. Brief services there Monday at 1 pm, will be followed by additional rites at 2 pm, in Hopewell Church. Burial will be in the Hopewell Cemetery. Bereaved are two sons, Vernon, in whose home he died and Hayes Conaway of Martins Ferry; a daughter, Mrs. Edith Hood, Martins Ferry, and three stepdaughters, Mrs. Minnie Taylor of Rayland, Mrs. Russell Lewis and Mrs. Cora Burch of Rush Run.

Mrs. Conaway dies at Warren Ridge

Sarah E, Conaway, wife of David Conaway died Thursday May 26, 1927, at 12 pm, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Minnie Taylor on Warren Ridge, after a brief illness, aged 74 Years. She was beloved by a large circle of friends who will regret to learn of her death, a devoted mother, a kind neighbor, who was always willing to lend a helping hand in time of sickness and need, a loyal friend, who will be missed by the community and by all who knew her. Funeral services were held at the Hopewell M. E. Church, Sunday afternoon, Rev. G. H. Langford officated and the interment was made in Hopewell Cemetery.

COX FUNERAL Funeral of the late Mrs. Nancy Hillis Cox, was held from the residence 1344 Ridge Avenue. Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Her pastor, the Rev Raymond Smiley of Westminster Presbyterian church, officiated. The pal bearers were; Fred Cropp, R. H. Cayter, William Harris, H. J. Weber, James Mooney, and Thomas Vance.
