Millenial Harbinger, 1886 archived at Historic Bethany, Bethany College, W., page 95,
Died, at his residence, near Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio, Dec. 21, at 7 o'clock, pm of Bronchial consumption, Bro. John Yocum, Sr, in the 67th year of age. Although a lingering decline confined him to his room for months, and his suffering, though not severe or painful was attended with great debility, he maintained to the last his unswerving confidence in the Savior, and died in full hope of an everlasting salvation beyond this vale of tears. The deceased was highly esteemed by the community in which he lived for his industry and honestly in life, and much appreciated by all who knew him by his benelovence and Christian deportment. He leaves a widow and ten children to follow his Christian example and treasure his memory in their hearts. May all be enabled, by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, to meet him in heaven where there will be no more sorrowing or parting - World wihtout end. The passing spirit gently fled, Sustained by grace divine, O may such grace on us be shed, And make our end like thine. Written by J.B. Priest.

Steubenville Daily Gazette, 30 Jan 1915,
John Yocum, one of Steubenville's oldest citizens passed away at his home, 317 North Sixth Street, Saturday morning, January 30, 1915 at 11:05 o'clock from a shock following the accident at his home on Thursday morning at which time he was severely burned. Mr Yocum was born on the old Cable farm located above Stanton Park on April 19, 1831 and was in his 84th year. His parents, John and Sarah Yocum, were pioneer residents of this city practically all their life. The Yocums name is an old one, the oldest residents being acquainted with early generations of the family, which is one of the largest connections in this section. Despite his advanced age, Mr. Yocum was at all times able to get about and was a familiar figure about the streets in the mornings, with a handshake and a "good morning" to everybody. For almost 45 years he was engaged in the ice business with others of the Yocum family, which is today still maintained under that name by members of the family. Prior to his being connected with the ice business Mr Yocum was a marble cutter. In late years however he had retired and for the past 22 years had not been in any active work. His first wife was Miss Eliza Whitson, who passed away in 1892. He married Miss Belle Jacobs of sixteen, this county, who survives. Mr Yocum was a devout member of the Christian church of this city all his life and in his earlier years was active in all its departments, his early service and assistance being one of the big factors in the upholding of that church and raising it to its present stage of efficiency. He served in the War of the Rebellion enlisting in the 157th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was a man of many connections being the oldest of his large family connections, which number more, perhaps than any other in the county. His wife, Mrs. Belle Yocum and the following children survive: Mrs Josiah Myers, Mrs. Louis McCormick, Charles, John Jr and Walter, all of Steubenville. One brother, Cyrus Yocum of this city, survives.
