Freedmen's Bureau Records
National Museum of African American History and Culture, Family Search (a non-profit family history organization associated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) and the National Archives and Records Administration joined forces to create an online, searchable database of persons whose names appear in the Freedmenís Bureau records between 1865 and 1872.
We are reaching out to genealogical groups in the area to see if they would be interested in helping to index the records that will form the bulk of this database. Indexing is the process of entering information from historical records into an online, searchable database. More information about the project is found by following this link: http://nmaahc.si.edu/GetInvolved/FreedmensBureau
Cuyahoga County Estate Files
Family Search has contracted with Cuyahoga County Probate Court to image seventeen years of probate records. The complete collection will cover from the 1880's to 1935. A full time missionary couple will be imaging the records. We need volunteers to help prepare the documents for imaging. The project will take 2 or more years to complete. These paper documents need to be opened, staples removed, pages separated and flattened in preparation for the camera.
There is a wonderful workspace in room #31 on the Ground floor of the Cuyahoga County Probate Court at 1 Lakeside, Cleveland, OH. We welcome help anytime, the project will be going on from 8:30 to 4:30 workdays from now to completion. It is not necessary but would be great if people would commit to help a day a month or a day a week. This is a great way to "Give Back" to the genealogy community and help others to identify their families. Please spread the word.
