Norman County Minnesota Historical and Genealogy Society
Museums located in Ada and Shelly, Minnesota
The Norman County Genealogy Society was formed in February, 1997 by local individuals interested in researching their family history. Their efforts quickly turned to helping people who were not from the local area by establishing a web site for Norman County. The group collected a vast amount of information, much of which is located on-line under Genealogy as well as available in the Log Museum in Ada. In 2013 the Genealogy Society merged with the Historical Society and became the Norman County Historical and Genealogy Society.
The members are dedicated to completing a number of projects. Two of the main ongoing projects are compiling obituaries from the various local newspapers as well as indexing the county cemeteries and adding headstone photos to the index. While many of the completed projects are featured on the Norman MNGenWeb Project web site, additional records are located at the Norman County Historical and Genealogy Research Center found in the Log Museum at the Prairie Village in Ada.
The museum and research center is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. In 2015 NCHGS was awarded a Legacy Grant from the Minnesota Historical Society to digitized the over 10,000 negatives of Norman County families photographed by Arnie Aalgaard taken from 1923 to 1973. We currently have scanned and indexed the years 1923 to 1946. Anyone interested in obtaining a copy of a photo may order copies from NCHGS.
Genealogist are encouraged to visit the Research Center to search the collection of information on the people who once lived in Norman County. The Center has extensive collections of obituaries, cemetery books, family histories, photos, plat maps and much more to aid individuals in their family search. The Research Center is open during regular museum hours or by appointment.
