Emmigration and Immigration
White settlers in colonial Maryland were primarily from the British Isles. In 1660, English immigrants began to settle in the Eastern Shore in what is now Wicomico county. Nearly all British immigrants to colonial Maryland were either servants or convicts. Maryland received more indentured servants than any other colony. In 1740, English, Scottish and Scotch-Irish began settling in Western Maryland. By 1870, virtually all immigrants to Maryland were of German origins.
This county is part of the USGenWeb Project, a non-profit genealogical resource web system, and is maintained by Sonny O'Haver with help and information provided by other volunteers.
