Pimlico Then and Now. – The resumption of racing at Pimlico this week is recalling to old Baltimoreans and old turfman many memories of the palmy days of this old Maryland track. A quarter of a century ago it was one of the famous turf centers of the world. Millionaires and men of social position from all over the land were accustomed to come to Baltimore spring and fall for the Pimlico events; thousands filled the big stand, clubhouse, paddock and field; the greatest horses of those years were brought here, and many, indeed, were the turf records made and broken there. With the degeneration of the sport in the hands of bookmakers, with unscrupulous ringsters substituted for the gentlemen who were formerly the backers, Pimlico, like other tracks famous of yore, steadily faded until for some years the broad enclosure has been deserted and bereft of racers. The effort to revive it and to bring here each year the famous horses of today deserves the most generous support in this city. It comes at a moment auspicious in turf history, when men like Mr. William C. Whitney are endeavoring to restore horseracing to its former plans as an honest and enjoyable sport. In such a revival Pimlico assuredly ought to share. – News.
