| GILBERT | Mrs Mary J. | 17 Dec 1894 | 5 Jan 1895 | GILBERT, Mary J. Mrs. Mary J. Gilbert, aged ? years, 19 months and 14 days, died after a brief illness, of pneumonia, December 17th, and was buried at Hopewell Cemetery, near Stewarstown, York county, Pa., on December 19th. Her funeral was preached at the Stewarstown M.E. Church, of which she was a member, by the pastor, Rev. Mr. Adams (rest of sentence I cannot make out.) Mrs. Gilbert, whose maiden name was Portner, was born in Lancaster county, Pa., February ?, 182?. She was married to Charles Gilbert of Harford county, Md., in the spring of 1848? and they lived for several years near Norrisville, Harford county, when they were burned out. Soon afterward they moved to the extreme northeast corner of the 7th district, in this county, adjoining the Mason Dixon and Harford county lines, where Mrs. Gilbert resided at the time of her death, her husband having died in 18??, leaving her with five small children to provide for, with means, which from misfortune and long sickness, had become quite limited. Mrs. Gilbert was converted to God in early life and was a consistent member of the M.E. Church for forty years. She was a meek, quiet and unassuming disposition, her sole object in life was seemingly to glorify God by following His commandments and doing His will. Although her life, after her husband's death, was one of constant toil, care and trials, her faith in God never wavered, but with a firm reliance upon Him who has promised to be a father to the widow and orphans, she bore her trials cheerfully and patiently, with evident submission to His divine will. Thus she lived the life of an exemplary christian, and died in the triumphant faith of a glorious immortality. One son and three daughters survive her. | Baltimore Democrat |

| GILL | George M. | ?? Nov 1887 | 26 Nov 1887 | Obituary--George M. Gill--George M. Gill, the oldest member by admission to the bar of Maryland, died suddenly on the steps leading to his office St. Paul street, on Friday morning ??th inst., aged 85 years, from paralysis of the heart superinduced by acute indigestion. Mr. Gill was a man of remarkable vigor of mind and body, and literally died with the harness on. When not prevented by ill health he was always to be found at his office. On the morning of his death he left his residence and proceeded to his office by a blue-line car. As he was about to go into his office he was noticed by some friends as being feeble. They assisted him to his office, and when attempting to ascend the steps he sank and died in about half an hour. No member of the bar in Maryland stood higher in integrity of character than Mr. Gill, and he was an honor to the profession. He enjoyed an extensive practice, being regarded as one of the safest cousellors at the bar. In his long life he enjoyed the confidence of his fellow citizens in many places of trust and honor. He was a Democrat of the strictest school, but he never aspired to political position, though during the term of Judge Brown as Mayor Mr. Gill was City Counsellor. He was also a member of the Constitutional Convention in 1867. He had also been a director in the Northern Central and also the Western Maryland Railroad. Mr. Gill was twice married, his first wife being Miss Ann W. McElderry, and the second, who survives him, Miss Ann McKinn Bowly. Mr. Gill leaves one son, Mr. John Gill, a member of the bar, and six daughters.. Mrs. Anne Brown, who died in October last, and was the wife of Gen. Stewart Brown, was a daughter of Mr. Gill by his first wife. Mr. Gill left a large estate which he managed himself. | (Towson) Maryland Journal |
