| FAIRBANKS | James A. | 23 Feb 1898 | 26 Feb 1898 | FAIRBANKS, JAMES A. Wednesday, 23d inst., James a. Fairbanks, aged 75 years died at his late residence, Randallstown, from an attack of heart disease. He came to Maryland from Vermont in 1847, and engaged in the quarrying of soapstone in the neighborhood of Marriottsville. Just before the civil war broke out he went to Virginia and engaged in farming, but returned to Maryland before the termination of the war, and located at Randallstown. He was a man of strong Southern proclivities, and at one time, he was nearly hanged by members of a Vermont regiment who were encamped near his farm in Virginia. His offense was that he was "a Vermonster and a rebel." He was a lifelong Democrat. His wife, who was a Miss Alveria Oursh, of Baltimore, died about 20 years ago. She was a lady of great personal worth of character, who devoted to good deeds, and was foremost in the work of the M.E. Church, of which she was a consistent working member for many years. Her charities were boundless and unostentatious and she always did her good deeds in that spirit of not citing her left hand know what her right hand did. She will be greatly missed in the sphere in which she moved, and the poor have lost a kind friend. Her funeral took place from her residence Monday, 13th. Rev. Dr.. E.S. Todd, of Strawbridge and Rev. Dr. W.G. Herbert of Caroline street officiated. Both gentlemen paid glowing tributes to her worth as an earnest Christian and of her labors of love in the church of which she was so long a working member. Interment was private. John W.
