The primary resource for genealogical research in Maryland is the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis. It is the best place for you to obtain copies of vital records (including birth and death certificates, wills and other government documents.

The Maryland State Archives is making information available on the web that will greatly help the ability of researchers from across the country. It seems that new items are being added all the time, so one has to carfully check their website periodically. Some of the current offerings of on-line data include

• an on-line search engine the supplemental listings of Maryland Settlers recently published by Dr. Carson Gibb
• alphabetically indexed HTML pages of marriages that have been inferred from records.
• An index to Maryland State Chancery Court Cases.
• An index to the Baltimore County Chancery Court Cases

You need to navigate your way through to find some of the on-line indexes Most of the files that have on-line search capacility are marked with a red astrisk. For example to find the Chancery Court data

1. Click on Reference and Research
2. Click on Finding Aids and Indexes
3. Click on Court Records
4. Under Chancery Court, click on Checklist of Indices
5. Scroll down to Chancery Papers Index 1713-1851

Also available for viewing is a listing of all the types of Baltimore County Records held at MSA.
