Late in the 1640s, he volunteered to teach the Puritan gospel in Isle of Wight County, VA. He moved there with his wife and children and preached there for several years. After Governor Berkeley issued his religious edict, Durand fled Virginia. He left with his wife and five children and settled along the Severn River in Maryland.
