Welcome to Anne Arundel County USGenWeb/MdGenWeb site. The purpose of this site is to help you find ancestors who lived in Anne Arundel Co. Here is very general introduction into the origin of Anne Arundel County and a definition of the early Hundreds and Parish boundaries Note that Howard County was formed from the Howard District of Anne Arundel County in 1851, therefore early Howard County records were part of Anne Arundel Co. Also note that the boundary between Anne Arundel County and Baltimore County has changed over the years. Originally the south shore of the Patapsco River was in Baltimore Co., but in the 1720s the boundary was changed to the river iteself. In the 20th century part of Anne Arundel County, such as Brooklyn, was annexed into Baltimore City.

One good research publication is John Powell's compilation of the 1850 Census Anne Arundel County., MD published by the Anne Arundel County Genealogical Society..This is NOT an index, it is a transcript of the entire 1850 census for Anne Arundel County (including the Howard District).
A recent release from the Anne Arundel Genealogical Society is a book describing the locations of all known cemetery sites in Anne Arundel Co. check the Anne Arundel County Genealogical Web site for details.

Many records including death and birth certificates before 1988, copies of wills, land records, court documents are archived at the Maryland State Archives located in Annapolis. MSA has on-line an Index to the Anne Arundel County 1880 Census. And fairly new An on-line index to the 1870 Census of Anne Arundel Co.. Another good collection of genealogical data at MSA is a Church Records for Maryland
The Maryland State Archives is making information available on the web, current offerings include a search engine for the supplemental listings of Maryland Settlers recently published by Dr. Carson Gibb and alphabetically indexed HTML pages of marriages that have been inferred from records. Also available for viewing is a listing of the Anne Arundel County Records held at MSA. Check out their research offerings at http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/homepage/html/refserv.html The Maryland state archives is also the best source for obtaining old birth, death, and marriage certificates for genealogical research. They now have forms for requesting this data on-line. Birth and Death certificates generally started in 1898 for Anne Arundel Co. Marriage licenses exist from 1777. A new feature from the Maryland State Archives is on-line searchable death indexes for Baltimore City and Maryland Cos. (including Howard County). These searchable indexes are by the year groups and last name. This MSA site provides instructions for order copies of vital records from the MSA and department of vital records.Another on-line data resource for researchers at MSA provides on-line assess to a search engine for the original 72 volumes of the Archives of Maryland plus additional volumes. This Includes acts of the general assembly, some court records, listing of Revolutionary war musters and other data. In all there are about 103 volumes on line with some of them being more contemporary government papers.
On-Line Data Available from this Site and Linked Sites
Cemetery Inscriptions of Anne Arundel County are being collected and contributed to the USGenWeb/MdGenWeb project. You can download some of them as ASCII files from the USGenWeb/MdGenWeb archives or view them On-Line. There is also the MD Tombstone Transcription Project cemetery project for the USGenWeb Project with its collection of cemetery records on line to help with your research. This collection has inscriptions from 17 Anne Arundel County Cemeteries on-line.
The latest addtion to the site is the start of a collection of death notices and obituaries from Anne Arundel County Newspapers , primarily the Capital in Annapolis.
The First Families of Anne Arundel and Baltimore Countiesis a collection of linked family group sheets of early settlers of Baltimore and Anne Arundel Counties (for now we are working on families who were in the area by 1720) and links to other sites with linage data Contributions of GEDCOMS or text files are welcomed to add to these pages.
We have been adding On-line transcripts of Wills of Anne Arundel and Baltimore County from the 17th, 18th, and 19th Centuries
Another data item is a collection of Family Bible Records for Anne Arundel and Baltimore Counties.
On-line Transcripts of other old documents for Baltimore and Anne Arundel County or Anne Arundel Co. , such as deeds, grants, court orders are also being collected to help researchers.
The Catalogue for Saint John's College (Department of Arts and Sciences of the University of Maryland) for the year 1917 was donated recently. A web page listing the alumni and graduates of St John's College from 1793 to 1916 is being prepared.
