Surnames: SMITH
Researcher: Joe Kane

Date posted: Wednesday, July 19, 2006

I am looking for information about the SMITH family, primarily my great-grandfather, Walter Driscoll SMITH, son of Page John SMITH and Sarah Dorothy SMITH. Page John SMITH was born in Montpelier, Vermont 27 September 1839. He was a highly respected jeweler in Cumberland, Md. He owned the largest jewelry store in Cumberland which was on Baltimore St. All his sons worked there, some longer than others. The oldest son, Dory, became a diamond merchant in Pittsburgh and married Josephine MCDOWELL. Frank Fectig SMITH, another son, was trained in optometry in Philadelphia and set up an optometry shop in Cumberland. Sons Walter and Armine SMITH left Cumberland early in their lives but had also worked in the jewelry store. Page John SMITH was known throughout the County and State for his honesty. He was a dignified and strict man. He walked straight with his shoulders back, maybe from his days as a soldier in the infantry during the Civil War.
