I'm researching my GGG Grandfather John WHITEFIELD. John was born in Scotland around 1814. John was naturalized in Cumberland, Maryland in 1844. John married Catharine WADE on February 14, 1842 in Allegany County, Maryland. Catharine was born in Ohio around 1822. John and Catharine had the following 6 children: William (Born 1841), Margaret (Born 1847), Cambridge (Born 1849), Clementine (Born 1855), James C. (Born 1857), and George H. (Born 1860). John and Catharine lived in the Westernport area of Western Maryland. John worked in the coal mines and in the 1870 Census his occupation was listed as a "Mine Boss". I'm trying to find out the names of John's parents so I can trace him back to Scotland. I thought I might be able to obtain this information from either his marriage license or his naturalization records. I'm not sure if this information can be obtained from the Courthouse in Cumberland? I'm hoping that someone living back in Cumberland might be able to help me out with this. I would greatly appreciate any help with this.
