An old photograph was found in my gggrandfather house in Frostburg, the DANDO's. This photo was of a tombstone in the name of David and Mary CELLY. It was written in the Welsh language. I had a friend from Wales translate the engraving but it was no help as to the identity of these people. I thought that the photograph was brought over to the US by the DANDO's because of the language. I however found it located in the Frostburg Memorial Park Cemetery. I can't figure out why they had this photo or who the people were. (maybe it was a spelling for KELLY??????) If anyone has heard of this name let me know. Thanks

My Grandfather, William HINKLE was born to William Marville HINKLE and Susana McKenzie Walker HINKLE. She was the daughter of John MCKENZIE and Elizabeth ADKINS. He was the son of Edward M. HINKLE and Harriet TWIGG HINKLE.

I have a picture of Susana MCKENZIE, but I would love to find a picture of Edward HINKLE and Harriet TWIGG HINKLE. I believe Harriet died around 1930 in Cumberland.

I would love any information anyone can offer on these lines.

Subject: Alleganey Co. James CULLEN and Bridget MERRIGAN of County Wicklow, Ireland, had a daughter named Ellen CULLEN, (b. 1847), who married John Joseph STAKEM (b. 1844), also of County Wicklow, Ireland. They began raising a family in Midland, MD in 1873, having 4 boys & 4 girls by 1886.

Their second child, Bridget Mary STAKEM, (b. 6 Oct., 1875), married Michael Paul MURRAY on 20 Oct., 1896. Michael P. MURRAY was the oldest of 6 children born to Robert MURRAY and Bridget (COSGROVE) Murray. R.M. Murray and Bridget Cosgrove were married 30 Dec., 1872 in Frostburg, MD. Their parents were: (his) Charles MURRAY and Nellie (THOMPSON) MURRAY, and (hers) Michael COSGROVE and Mary (Mooney) COSGROVE.

Another person (unrelated to the previous names) that I am researching is Michael Joseph MALAMPHY, (b. 1859) in Tipperary, Ireland. I was told that he came to the U.S. at the age of 16 (?), about 1875. He worked as a miner in the Allegany Mts., saved his money, and opened the Malamphy Bottling Co. in Cumberland, MD. In the early 1880's, he married Elizabeth STANTON, who gave birth to 6 children. She died, (date & cause unknown) and eventually M.J. Malamphy re-married in 1901. His second wife was Minnie Laura GOODING, from Culpeper Court House, Virginia. He and his new wife had an additional 6 children. Minnie L. GOODING was born in 1878 to George Washington GOODING & Margaret J. (SPICER) GOODING. The only information that I have on my gggrandfather is that he was from Cedar Creek, VA . His name was John BROWN and he married an Eliza COFFMAN. I don't even have a birthdate. I do know that his son, my ggrandfather was born in 1884. His name was Clinton Sylvester BROWN; he moved to Allegany Co. and subsequent families stayed there. Where do I start? What info. do I need for the archives? I suppose he would have fought for the South since he was from VA. Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm looking for members of the LAZIER/LEASURE/LEZEAR/LAZURE... clan that migrated across Maryland toward Bedford County in the 1760's and 1770's. They seem to have entered the country near the Chesapeake Bay in the early to mid 1700's; lived around York County, PA and Frederick County, MD.

Dominant names include John, Thomas, and Joseph. Also, Henry, Christian, and Jacob. I already have the book on descendents of Abraham by Thelma Leasure Marshall. At this point I would like to hear from anyone researching
(a.) John LEZER who lived in St. Mary's County in the early to mid 1700's.
(b.) Joseph LAZEAR who married Susnnah WEBB in 1702 and was naturalized in 1721 in P.G. County.
(c.) Abraham who came from Switzerland ca. 1754.

My particular group of Lazier's seem to have travelled across Maryland in the company of the MELLOTS, PERRINS, DICKENS, GORDONS, LOVEs and others. Some of them lived in Conococheague prior to moving toward Flintstone, MD and across the border into Bedford County, PA. They settled in Bean's Cove. I'm researching the SCHAFFER name from Cumberland they came there in about 1848 from Lindheim,Hesse-Darmstadt,Germany in 1847 to Cumberland. Henry and Anna Catherine SCHAFFER( also spelled SHAFFER) had 12 children Philip,George,Maria,Conrad,Margaret,Adam,Elizabeth, Frederick,Henry,William,Mary. They were members of St. Luke's Lutheran Church. All of the men were stone masons and helped to build the first St. Luke's Church, It has the town clock in it. The men all served in the Civil War. I have a lot of info now but would be interested in more.

Searching for info on Peter LONG: b. 30 Dec 1825 Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, and d. 04 Jan 1904 Waynesboro, Franklin County, PA and Mary Catherine (EASTON) LONG, his 2nd wife: b. 6 Apr 1825 in Virginia, d. 30 Apr 1895 Waynesboro also. Peter’s obit shows immigrating from Germany in 1855. His first wife may have been Carol WAGHETTE, supposedly born in Germany. She may have died in Germany. 1880 Census shows Mary Catherine’s father born in Ireland and mother in Virginia. Have not been able to verify the above 4 items.

4. Emma Jane b. 26 Oct 1864 Round Top, MD (?); d. 27 Nov 1933 Reading, PA; believed to have been living with her brother Philip at the time.
5. Isaiah b. 1 Nov 1865 Antrim Twn, Franklin Co., PA; d. 19 Dec 1927 Waynesboro; 1870 Census shows Isaiah born in Maryland; m. Mattie M. McCULLOUGH
6. Mary Catherine b. Jan 1870 Maryland (1870 Census). No other info.
7. Samuel Luther b.16 Apr 1874 in PA. Nothing else known about Samuel other than Emma Jane’s obit saying he moved west (to Ohio).

I'm trying to get some info on Robert ROSS ,minister, who served the Flints. Circ.:Mt.Pleas. l868-69. The church was listed as Meth. Epis. S. I found this info in Ministers of Md. Churches l634-l990. The ref. was History of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. I think the S is Southern Methodist .

Does anyone know if there is a Methodist Church in Flintstone at present time and on what charge? The only Mt. Pleasant I know is in Frederick Co. He married my husband's grandparents in Westernport and I think he was related. Does anyone know if Mt. Pleasant has Methodist church and on what charge? Thanks

Looking for ancestors or siblings of William WILAND b. 1785 m Margaret DURST settled in Allegany Co which part is now Garrett Co. Have a Hannah WILAND as marrying Christian DURST. She may have been a sister. William was a Methodist in the Grantsville area. Have a good bit of information of the time, but can't make any connection to get him to a place of birth or a family that he descended from. Even the variant spellings I encounter across PA have no structure.

I am looking for information on my great- grandfather, Truman BOWMAN, probably born in Pennsylvania, raised his famil;y in Buck Valley, Fulton County, PA, and died in Allegheny County, MD, probably between 1910 and 1915.

He is buried in a small cemetery off I-68 east of Cumberland. His wife was Nancy (don't know her maiden name) and she died and was buried in Pennsylvania. Joseph ZWING/ZWENG is said to have been murdered (after Sept 1882) at a canal in Cumberland, MD. Can anyone tell me how to go about finding info on this?

Joseph was born c 1839 and was listed on the 1880 census for Cumberland along with his wife Margaret (nee) SMITH and their 7 children. They had moved to Cumberland from Martinsburg, WVA by 1867. He was from Germany and was naturalized in Allegany Co in 1874.

In Sept 1882, Joseph filed a suit against George HAMMERSMITH regarding a mortgage. Could that have been the cause of the murder? I would really appreciate any assistance or suggestions on finding info on Joseph (or his family -- only son was George ZWING).

Does anyone know of ZWING/ZWENGS in Cumberland now, or in the past?

I'm looking for information on the families and histories of Ferdinand and Agatha OBECK/OBECKER who were born in Prussia, went to the West Indies and then to Maryland. In family records there are 3 boys/sons: William bn @1835 in West Indies and married Anna TROLL, Henry bn @1840 USA? and married Elizabeth STEGEMUELLER, and John TARVEY.

Questions: Where did they come from? Why Prussia-West Indies-Maryland? When did they arrive in MD? What happened to sons? Where are they buried? Who was John TARVEY? I do have a little information that I will gladly share. There is also an O'Baker family reunion in July. Thank you.

The OBAKERS/OBECKERS/O'BAKERS all lived in Cumberland, MD. Numerous ones were married in Saints Peter and Paul RC Church and some are buried there. I have found Ferdinand and Agatha in census records for Cumberland.

I am attempting to research the SUTER family.

My grandfather was John Ellsworth SUTER, b. 10/24/1870, possibly in Piedmont, W.Va., but more than likely in Cumberland.

John had a twin sister, Emma m. (?) JAMMER and lived in Cumberland until she died. Emma had a son Suter JAMMER, who died young in N. Y. and a dau. Mary Ivalou JAMMER WHITE who lived in the family home on (?)Columbia St. until she died 12/17/1990.

John and Emma's parents were Jacob Amer SUTER, b. 4/9/1843 and Mary Isabel WALKER, b. 9/17/1847. They are both buried in Westernport.

Jacob's parents were Peter SUTER, b. 7/17/1806 m. Amelia RENNER, b. 1/17/1807. Both are supposed to be buried in Cumberland and must have lived there.

Peter's father was Peter also and was supposedly b. 4/4/1776 in Taneytown, Md. and buried in Rose Hill Cem., Hagerstown.

I would like to go back further but don't seem to be able to find any info. Can anyone help me? I would also like to find out about the WALKER side. We used to visit WALKERS, NEFFS, Thomas. BERRY, and William WILSON and I was told they were cousins. They all lived in Cumberland.
