The Allegany County Courthouse sits on the site
of old Fort Cumberland (1755, French and Indian
War). George Washington's HQ's located nearby, on
bank of Wills Creek. This a very historic site
and is very accommodating to visitors. The folks
who work in the courthouse are very accommodating to visitors, also. (Thanks to Connie Beachy,

The Ort Library will provide
photocopies of obituaries. One or two requests for
photocopies of obituaries from newspapers held by the Ort Library will
be processed by the Interlibrary Loan staff as time permits. Requests
must include the persons' name and death date (month, day, and year>
and may be submitted via email to: ill@frostburg.edu or via the
USPS at: Interlibrary Loan, Lewis J. ort Library, 1 Stadium Drive,
Frostburg State university, Frostburg, MD 21532-2342. Photocopies for
each request will cost $15.00, made payable in advance to Frostburg

They require their Form NA13075 (available at
Veterans Administration facility), and for
privacy reasons, the serviceman's death
certificate and your birth certificate to prove
next of kin status. For WWII and earlier, it
helps if you can include a photocopy of his
dogtag. Keep copies of all correspondence,
because they lose things. You must be tenacious
and may even have to invoke the Freedom of
Information Act.
Complete records may include enlistment photos,
physical exam reports, marksmanship records, pay
vouchers, unit assignments, and information
regarding all campaign medals
