| Ballyhannon Castle (Castlefergus, Castle Fergus, Ballyhannan Castle, Baile Ainnean, "Home of the O'Hannans") | Full* | Tower-House/Castle - "The castle stands on a low rock, scarped to the west and had no outworks… The very perfect tower, measuring 33’6” x 24’, is in excellent preservation, having been inhabited in the last century. The pointed south door is defended by a shot-hole on the left and a murder hole above. The stair mounts round the s.w. angle, and at the 14th step a long corridor with 2 lights in the w. wall is reached. At the n. end a spiral staircase of 72 steps leads to the top. At the 12th step from the corridor another passage through the n. wall is reached. 5 curved steps at the s. end of the w. corridor lead to a similar passage along the s. wall over the porch and lodge. There is a handsome trefoil headed window of 2 lights in the s.w. angle and a garderobe to the s.e. angle. Mounting the spiral stair still higher other corridors, over the lower ones, in the w. and s. sides, are reached. There are 4 main stories under the stone vault forming the roof. The basement story has very deep recesses under the corridor and the 2 on the n. side have a narrow chamfered screen between them. A fireplace bears the date 1576, but this was of course a later addition to the building.” | 1570

It was constructed of roughly coursed undressed limestone blocks, with dressed stone reserved for the quoins and around the window opes and doorways. It was in use as a cowshed up until recently. A large house attached to the south wall of the tower at a later date was inhabited up to 1837 but has since been removed. Evidence of its location remains in the form of the weather-line of its roof, which is clearly visible." | <1551

| Caher Bullog (Cahermoyle) | Ruins | Caher - "This fort is featureless and much dilapidated, though it looks well from either of the roads, between which it is nearly equidistant, being near the bottom of the valley. It is a slightly oval ring, 91 feet north and south, and 96 feet east and west. The wall is 7 feet thick, 8 feet high, and coarsely built; the garth is level with the top of the wall save where the southern section has been raised by a modern wall. Wherever the outer face has fallen the clean built face of a second section appears as at Caher-screbeen, and, perhaps, implies an enlargement of the original fort by building a new rampart round it. There are no ancient foundations apparent in or around the fort." | ????

| Cahermurphy Castle (Cathair Murchadha) | Ruins | Tower-House - "Only one side remains, featureless and built of flagstones. It is only remarkable for the great earthworks. The enclosure consists of two great mounds, 10 or 12 feet high, with fosses between and outside. Thence slighter mounds enclose a shield-like enclosure with a rounded end, the longer axis lying east and west. There may have been a ring round the peel tower, but all is much overgrown, and I had little time for its examination. It measures about 355 feet east and west, and 200 feet north and south, being over 50 feet across the ditches." | ????

At the second floor there is a good collection of fashioned stones including quern stones and millstones. At the third floor there is a good AV display illustrating the history of Co Clare. The room above the second vault has a fine fireplace. There is a three-light window in the west wall and a two-light window in the south wall. Much of this appears to be a reconstruction. Remains of windows at different heigths are seen, by which it seems to be quite different from some other towers, that have windows only at or near the summit, as that of Kildare, and many other places; the workmanship also seems to be different from that of many others. It must be evident, that these towers were built at different periods, and for perhaps very different purposes; the most rude at remote, and those, in which ornaments have been attempted, many centuries after: that at Dysert has on the outside of the second story the remains of a projecting flag, like our modern belting course, running round the building, and about eight inches broad; it also appears to have had battlements." | Inchiquin | Dysert, Mollaneen | R282848 | National Monument | Round
