Shelly and I loved our adventures in Noble County today. We have traveled to over 20 counties in Indiana and we noticed that Noble County stands out for its descriptive markers at the edges of towns or where towns used to be. We are thrilled to find these locations and your markers make it easier to be sure we are in the right place. Thank you for your diligence!

I have heard there are books from Noble County about Ghost Towns, Churches of Noble County, Schools of Noble County, etc. Are these books that are available for purchase? Or are they at the library so they might be viewed? I noticed there is one on your publications page about schools. Are there any others similar to this that have been published?
I am directly related to the Hursey family that has been and still is in Noble County. If anyone has information they would like to share, or if I can help with any ancestry about the Hursey family, feel free to contact me.
Also, I am looking for anyone that has any information about the Wilkinson Quilt factory, or any items from there. The Indiana State museum in Indianapolis was looking for items. Also, the author of the Wilkinson Quilt factory book, Marilyn Goldman would be very interested.
If I have posted too much on here, please feel free to remove it.
Thank you for your time and website!

Both my paternal and maternal grandparents had a connection with northern Indiana. My paternal grandfather was born in Noble County, but later migrated to Michigan. My maternal great, great grandfather lived briefly in the same region (not sure it was Noble County) before homesteading in northern Michigan. I'm interested in what may have caused them to leave, which I suspect was disease in both cases: My grandfather's parents both died within 6 months of each other, leaving him a orphan at age 8. My other great, great grandfather found that this area was bad for his health due to a form of malaria he contracted during the Civil War called AGUE (?). Any information related to that topic might be of interest.

I just recently stopped at the residence at 505 S. Cavin St. Ligonier, IN because I saw someone walking outside the property and looked to have been painting the exterior. The home is in terrible disrepair (inside and outside) though the current owner has recently started trying to fix it up some. I am wondering if the historical society has interest in helping preserve this home? It was, while my grandmother owned it, a rooming house called The Lodge.

I would like to know if you still have the cello that Joseph Seaburg made. My father, William Jarrett of Grand Rapids MI, Joseph's grandson by his daughter, Irma Seaburg Jarrett, will be turning 90 in June '15. He does not know that the cello is there. His brother, Ralph, from Elkhart saw it several years ago, but those of us in Michigan never heard about it until just recently from my cousin in Elkhart. We would like to surprise my dad by taking him on a trip to see it, so I need to know if it's still there.

Also, are your hours current: Saturdays from Memorial Day, 1:30 to 4:30, until the third weekend in Sept. Price for adults $3.00.

I like your website background map. We have the exact same original map framed and hanging in our farmhouse.

I am searching for some historical information with regard to our farm in Noble County. My mother, Alice Swogger, always enjoyed history and I remember her telling me that she found a reference to our farm on a couple of occasions. The first referenced the owner of our farm (maybe Browse) at the time who returned from the Civil War and built a sheep shed on the property. That barn has been restored and still stands today. The second reference was to a site on our farm that was called Three Springs. It must have been some small settlement or stopover site for water. We still find broken shards of pottery and glassware when tilling the field. There is also a small road (trail) that leads down into the ravine where the springs are. We used to even be able to see the wagon tracks in the trail when I was a little kid.
I would like to know how to research any records that might provide more information or confirm what my mother had told me.
Thanks,
Scott Swogger

I am having a terrible time and have been through each cemetery listed in Noble County looking for my g.g.g.grandfather's sister. Her name was Mary Jane Trussel born 1826 in Columbus, Ohio. I finally found her death date using your web site; death was September 20,1872. She was the widow of David Trussel Sr. born in 1818 Pa. Children were; Wesley, Amelia, and Colbert. There was a probate done and the guardian of the children appt. by the court; Nelson Prentis date was ll/26/1872. Now is it possible that the body was sent to Fredricksberg, Va. as that is where David was finally buried as he died in 1863 fighting in the Civil War?

Could you help me find her grave or maybe an obit? I will pay for your help as this is very important to my search. David died Jan. l, 1863 but I think the body was moved to Fredricksburg in April 1863.

I am on ancestry.com and Colbert was my direct decendant and Mary Jane is his sister. I am slowly piecing together the siblings of the Colbert Embrey family. John, Colbert, Amelia, Mary Jane, and Sarah A. from what I can tell were his siblings. I still haven't been able to find their parents. They came to DeKalb County in 1838 from Columbus, Ohio. Anyway if you could locate something on where they buried Mary Jane Trussle I would really appreciate it.

Hope that is not too much information but if there is an obit I feel that it would of been done in Albion as that is the last entry of residence on the census. Her name was listed as "Trusler" but it should of been "Trussel".

Hi : I am looking for information on a silent movie filmed in Kendallville about 1927. Title is unknown, but it 'stars' Beulah (Griem) Ritter who happens also to be my Mother. I believe it was a story of City Hall on South Main Street being on fire and my mother is saved by some (unknown) hero. I understand that this movie was shown at the old Strand Theater for time to time. My last living relative who was Betty (Glass) Shultz - later 'Welch' of 130 Morton St; Kendallville passed away several years ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks !

My name is Bernie Giles and I live in North Carolina. I am planing to to a genealogy trip to Indiana the second week of July.
I would like to know what your hours of operation are, a contact person and your address. I am looking for my great grandfather times four. His name was Ransom Judah Baldwin and was born in 1826 in I think Ashtabula County, Ohio. He was son to Ransom Baldwin who was born in 1803 and died about 1888. I know that he was living in Noble Township, Noble County in 1870. According to Ancestry. com he married Eunice Madison on 3/3/1851. I believe she died in 1861 in Noble County. On 1/5/1873 he married Eliza Ann Stewart in Noble County.
I would like to know if you have any records on all of the above mentioned family members? I would also like to know how much would a search by you cost?
Thank you so much in advance.

Hello. I've been doing some local research (Woodstock, IL) and in local newspaper clippings (1890s) there are several articles about securing the Kneipp Sanitarium for the city of Woodstock and even articles referring to construction beginning on the facility (land grading, stump removal, etc.). And then... nothing. No mention of it again...

I googled Kneipp Sanitarium and see that there is a Kneipp Sanitarium just north of Rome City, IN. I'm assuming the deal fell through here in Woodstock, IL and they chose to build in Rome City.

I was wondering if you had any information on the Sanitarium and how it came to be built in Noble County. Trying to piece together why it was never built here in Woodstock.

Any information or direction would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your help!

Hello, my name is Christina Bunting. I am a writer for a historical magazine in Indianapolis and am working on an article about a county in the northern part of the state; the article may be about anything that is historical in nature. I am interested in Noble County and was wondering if your historical society has resources concerning any particular people, places, or events that might be of interest to a broader Indiana audience.

To give an idea of the scope of the article, my last publication was on Orange County, and the article focused on the French Lick Springs Hotel, which largely contributed to the success of the town of French Lick and Orange County as a whole.

I would be interested to learn about any prominent families, businesses, or local events that are unique to Noble County which had some sort of historical impact.

Thank you for your time.
Best regards,
Christina Bunting

Coppes, Zook & Mutschler in 1907 operated a saw mill, furniture factory and made the Napanee line of Hoosier kitchen cabinets.
Would you have a copy of this, I assume a local newspaper, so we could fine out what they were doing? I would guess they were advertising to purchase logs for their sawmill.

Noble County Connection Great-great grandfather came in 1835
How did you find this page Googled for the site
Comments:
I am working on my paternal genealogy. My great-great grandfather, George Swank obtained land in 1835, which originally was in LaGrange County, then Noble county after that county was formed in 1836.
Two questions I have: In reading the 1882 Noble County history, I found a reference to Haw Patch in Perry Township. But I also found reference to Haw Patch in LaGrange county. My father had mentioned Haw Patch. Where would Haw Patch actually been located?
Second Question: Among my father's saved pictures was a school teacher May Cosper. I believe she may have been the daughter of George Cosper who lived in Brimfield. My question is -- might Cosperville have been named for this George Cosper? And what was the community called before it was named Cosperville?
Thanks for your help. If you have anything to do with the wealth of genealogical materials on the Noble County library website, I am most grateful. Also, my husband and I have done research in the library on two occasions.

I am searching for information about my decendents Solomon Murrey and Elizabeth. His children are James L. Murrey and Bazzel Murrey. James Lawrence has a prominent farm for a long time and my great aunt owned the only funeral home in town (McCay's) James L. also was a teacher, justice of the peace for a year and sunday school teacher at Mt. Tabor Methodist Church.

We are trying to find the parents of Soloman Murrey and exactly where he came from in Maryland before coming to Ohio. We are also trying the determine the maiden name of his wife Elizabeth and his siblings.

Thank you so much for any help that you can provide.

How did you find this page Researching family history
Comments:
My father, John V. Singleton, was sherrif of Noble County for 4 terms: 1924, 1926, 1942, and 1944. I was born in the jail in 1926. In those days, the sherrif and his family lived in the jail. I was the 8th of 10 children. This was during prohibition, so the jail was a very busy place.

There were many interesting aspects about living in the jail, such as cooking for the prisoners and dealing with the fear of prisoner escapes. On one occasion my sister was emptying the trash from the cells and a prisoner pushed her to the ground, pushed me aside and escaped. He was captured within an hour by my father and his deputy. These and other experiences made for an interesting and exciting childhood.

Hello,
My grandfather was Fred Kelham. He was born 5 Oct 1887 and died 5 Oct 1909 just a month and a few days prior to the birth of my mother, Emma in Avilla. He married Bess Whetzel who, I think was also from Avilla. Her parents were Joseph Conrad Whetzel and Gertrude Eckels Whetzel. I have an email from my cousin (George Osner of Modesto, CA) that contains many obituaries from the Kelham nd Whetzel families. I'd like to visit Nobel County either this year or next and would like to find out more about my grandfather and his family s well as the Whetzel family. Can you tell me any more (other than what was in the obituary) about Fred Kelham? Do you know the whereabouts of any Kelham decendants who might still be living in Indiana?
Hope to visit with you soon.,
Gary Gilbreth

There are numerous pictures which have no names on them which I am trying to identify. Please take note of my email address and direct any Lungs who might contact you doing research to me as I will share anything I have(no charge. I am planning on setting up a short term album on the internet after xmas where I will post all the pictures to it and you many view and down load any that you would like at that time. I just wanted to say hi and tell you a little about the Community Work Experience Program that we offer through IMPACT. I am trying to bring the community closer together and therefore achieving better outcomes when it comes to employment. The Community Work Experience Program is directed to serve businesses in Indiana for IMPACT clients to acquire job skills and workforce knowledge that is crucial in today's economy. The business gains the additional employee with no cost to the organization. IMPACT clients are mandated to volunteer in order to achieve program hours and therefore be able to keep their food stamps or TANF or both. IMPACT is a helping hand up instead of a "hand out." If you are interested in the CWEP program please do not hesitate to get a hold of me at 574-527-2364 or johncover@arboret.com and I am really looking forward to meeting with you to see what we can do for each other as well as the community.

Thank you for your time and consideration,
