Roster of DUV Presidents Mary Todd Lincoln Tent #48 1918-1994

Narrative of the Review of Years 1918-1990 from minutes of record by Christine Rothrock, Secretary, July 1994.

September 18, 1918, the first meeting was held to establish a Tent for the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War to be located in Springfield, Illinois. The meeting was held at 9:00pm at the GAR hall located in the Courthouse, Springfield, Illinois. At this meeting Officers for the year 1918 were elected as follows:

President ------------Florence Grundy
Sr. Vice. Pres. -----Emma Stanton
Jr. Vice-Pres. ------Emma Brewer
Chaplain ------------Emma Dunlap
Treasurer -----------Grace Murray
Council Mem.------Mae Murphy/Ionia Lonion
Patriotic Inst.-------Mrs. Dessell (minutes do not reflect she served)
Anna M. Shepherd (served by minutes)
Secretary-------------Mayme Herbert

At this meeting, it was "moved and accorded that this Tent bear the name of Mary Todd Lincoln" (carried). The Minutes reflect the Tent bore the name of Mary Todd Lincoln Tent #44. The Minutes list the name as Mary Todd Lincoln Tent #44 until September 27, 1920 when the Minutes reflect the name recorded thereafter as Mary Todd Lincoln Tent #48. No reason was given for change of Tent #.

The following addresses listed as meeting places for Tent #44, subsequently Tent #48.
1918-- GAR HALL (Courthouse)
1959---Voted to rent room in the Odd Fellows Temple, 2131/2 South 4th Street, Springfield, IL, and pay $3.00 per month for rent. (100F Temple)
1959----534 South 2nd Street, Springfield, IL, ---Headquarters for NDUVCW
1960---Home of Veterans of Foreign Wars--- no rent fee. (VFW)
1962--American Legion Home, 625 South 2nd Street, Springfield
1969--DUV museum & Headquarters Built, April 1969
1991--Reactivated DUV Tent #48 met in National Headquarters Museum, South Walnut Street, Springfield, IL.

In reviewing and cataloging the Book of Minutes given me by the DUV President of Mary Todd Lincoln Tent #48, for review and updating of information, some items appear of unusual interest in this time period.

In 1918 for two months no meetings were held because of Influenza Epidemic.

In November 1918 no meeting was held because no one was available to attend, they were all in "Peace Celebration."

At the first meetings, the penny collection was 15 cents, the Balance in the Treasury was $2.15 and each month $1.00 was paid to the Janitor.

It was interesting to note that meetings were held every few weeks, sometimes in a period of 2 weeks. In 1920 the Meeting time was changed to the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month. However, meetings still held late into the evenings. Dues appear to be 50 cents and $1 but by entries you cannot tell how often they paid.
Meetings were also held in Homes with Pie Socials, Card Parties, Dances, Plays, Musicals, etc.

Foxie's note: in the listing of Past Tent Presidents by Christine there is a gap in the minutes from the years 1968 to 1981 with records missing. Then from 1986 - 1990 no meetings were held. putting the Past Tent Presidents on their own web page.

When the Tent began meetings again in 1981 the attendance dwindled to 2---3---4 persons attending, the last Minutes were July 16, 1985.

Respectfully submitted, July 1994. Christine Rothrock, Secretary Tent #48
