MEETINGS
Regular Pinellas Genealogy Society (P.G.S.) meetings are held on the third Saturday of the month beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the Jenkins Auditorium in the Largo Library. Guests are warmly welcomed and encouraged to attend.

The Pinellas Genealogy Society’s mission is to further genealogical research and preservation of Pinellas County genealogy materials. New members are welcomed at all times during the year. And speaking of NEW MEMBERS....give a welcome to:

Annual dues per person are $17 and joint memberships are $25. Application forms available in the library or on the P.G.S. website.

And speaking of DUES….It is that time of year again. Dues for 2007 are now being collected. Target to have them paid by 30 December of this year so your membership can be active for 2007.

The War of the Rebellion: a Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies This is a searchable version of the complete Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. This is the same set of 60 or so volumes that are available in our library. Search for your ancestors and see if they were publicly notable enough to make it into an official correspondence.

EDUCATION

Computers Interest Group (CIG)
This group meets monthly at 9:45 A.M. in the Jenkins Assembly Conference Room on the third Saturday of each month just prior to the regular PGS meeting. This forum is an informal discussion group in a question and answer format on anything related to the use of computers in genealogy. There is no fee and all levels of computer expertise are welcome. The CIG is led by Bob Bryan. Next meeting date: 18 November 2006.

The Family Tree Maker Group (FTM)
FTM enthusiasts meet the first Saturday of each month, October through May, at 10:00 A.M. in the Jenkins Assembly Conference Room. Each session lasts approximately two hours. There is no fee for this workshop. Led by Karen Keegan . Next FTM meeting date: 4 November 2006.

PAF Users Group
This year we tried something new and held a user’s group meeting for those interested in the PAF (Personal Ancestral File) computer program. The meetings were held in March and October and were well-received. In fact, they were so popular that we have decided to hold two more meetings in 2007. Keep your eye on the PGS News for the date and place of these meetings.

In the meantime…is there some instruction or guidance that you would like the PGS to explore and possibly make available to you? Or is there some instruction you are willing to give that you think other PGS members would be interested in? If there is, please contact Pat Strait, Education Chair. The PGS succeeds due to the involvement of its members…either in stating interest or in volunteering expertise. Get involved!

News from Special Collections
• When calling the Largo Library with questions relating to genealogy, please use the number for the Genealogy Help Desk: 727-586-7410. • Please do not re-shelve books or return other materials. Our volunteers count each item returned as a statistic. These counts help us to determine our peak times for service and areas of high demand. Thank you! • Please continue to bring in flyers or brochures about libraries you visit this year. Thanks! • When using the microfilm, please rewind the film before returning it to its box. Please do not remove the take-up reel; this will only leave the film in an upside-down and backwards state! ▪ Volunteers are available at the Largo Library to assist researchers in getting started in genealogy and using the library collection. Hours are: Monday through Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Monday through Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. If you would like to volunteer please see anyone at the Genealogy desk or the Reference desk on the second floor of the library.

New Irish Genealogy Materials
Thanks to the recent Pinellas Public Library Cooperative Reserve Grant fund, the Genealogy Center was able to purchase the following Irish materials. These appeared in the last PGS News, but the list is so extensive that we will carry it again in this issue.

Old Ordnance Survey Maps
These maps are reprints from Alan Godfrey Maps, out of the UK. They are highly detailed, about 14 inches to the mile, and show streets, railways, factories, mills and docks. They are shelved in the book stacks of the library in a file box in the Irish section (929.3415).

The Pinellas Genealogist

This official publication of the Pinellas Genealogy Society is issued free of additional charge to paid-up members of the Society. Authors and compilers, members and non-members alike, are not only welcome to, but encouraged to, submit articles for publication. Also appreciated are stories of research trips and reviews of printed or computerized genealogy materials. New items of genealogical reference are also gratefully accepted.
