Volume 8, Issue 7

July 2003

Previous Issue

We had a great crowd at the June meeting for Kay Turansky’s presentation on Personal Life History writing. Kay certainly inspired and motivated members to begin writing their own history with her tips and experiences.

Our annual PGS picnic, held Saturday June 28th, at Largo Central Park included lots of fun, food, and challenging games such as identifying the childhood photograph of 13 PGS members.
All meetings begin at 11:00 AM in the Jenkins auditorium in the Largo Public Library. Guests are warmly welcomed and encouraged to attend. The Computer Interest Group meets before the general meeting at 9:45 AM.

Debbe Hagner is available to tackle your individual brick wall dilemma at the Aug. 16th meeting. Please submit your question or problem to Gladys Evan to the August meeting.
Family History Scrapbook Workshop
Kristin Jones, scrapbook consultant and fellow genealogist, will present a session on scrap booking on August 9th, 2003, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Enrollment is limited to 16, so please register with Pat Strait (546-3461) or Lesleigh Butts (398-5378)

The Beginners Study Group will not be meeting again until sometime in fall. This group is designed to help beginners get started in genealogy and serve as a forum for advanced genealogists to share their strategies. Please feel free to e-mail Pat Strait, Education Chair, to let her know that you are interested in joining Bette Raup and the group when it reconvenes later this year.

The Family Tree Maker Group is on summer hiatus and will not meet again until October. Dates and topics will be announced at a later date.
Computers In Genealogy
Computer Interest Group (CIG) – Meets monthly at 9:45 A.M. in the Jenkins Assembly Conference Room on the third Saturday of each month just before the regular PGS meeting throughout the year. This forum is an informal discussion group in a question and answer format on anything related to the use of computers in genealogy. There is no fee and all levels of computer expertise are welcome. To become a member of the email discussion list, email Bob Bryan
We would like to express our condolences to Theresa DeRolf, PGS member and past Vice President, on the passing of her husband, Fred DeRolf.
PGS Quarterly needs you!

The Editor would also appreciate stories of your research trips and reviews of printed or computerized genealogy materials. Naturally, Pinellas County material is always needed. PGS Members: Up to two queries are free!! Thank you for your continued support of our quarterly!
News from Special Collections
• When calling the Largo Library with questions relating to genealogy, please use the number for the Genealogy Help Desk: 586-7410.
• Please do not re-shelve books or return other materials. Our volunteers count each item returned as a statistic. These counts help us to determine our peak times for service and areas of high demand. Thank you!
• Please continue to bring in flyers or brochures about libraries you visit this year. Thanks!
• When using the microfilm, please rewind the film before returning it to its box. Please do not remove the take-up reel; this will only leave the film in an upside-down and backwards state!

The Largo library has received a new CD ROM:
Ship List – Passenger Ships Arrivals at Canadian Ports 1865-1899 as well as the 14 volume book set Dictionary of Canadian Biography. This biographical dictionary is a comprehensive listing of individuals who contributed to Canada’s development; and not just the rich and famous, but people from all walks of life.

We would like to thank the following individuals for their donations to the genealogy library last month. It is due to the generosity of our members and friends that our collection is the best in the area.
