Scroggs

"The Story of a Pioneer. Personal Recollections of William Lee Scroggs." William Lee Scroggs, unpublished manuscript, April 3, 1893. William Lee Scroggs, 1816 - 1894 wrote this Memoir at his family's insistence. They felt that his life was so interesting that it must be captured. Apparently, multiple copies were then made and handed down to his many children. I first noticed our family's copy in the 1960s. It was typed on the pages of a school notebook. I'd always assumed this was the only copy until recently when I happened to make contact with Jim Scroggs, William Lee's great grandson. Jim told me that there are many copies of the Memoir around and that he himself has about six. He also said that his Dad had portions of it printed in a local (Washington State) newspaper in the 1930s; due to William's descriptions of travels to Oregon the Memoir sparks local interest in the northwest. William was first cousin (once removed) to Kit Carson, the famous Mountain Man and Scout. It is doubtful that they ever met, but they lived in the same time; Kit was born in 1809. Kit Carson's Autobiography is an interesting foil to this Memoir, providing another angle to life in the west in the mid 1800s. SH1

Shreve

"The Genealogy and History of the Shreve Family from 1641." Luther P. Allen, Privately Published, 1901 For this SHREVE family history, L.P. Allen collected information from many contemporary (all before 1901) SHREVEs and their collateral relatives, and from other sources such as "Austen's Dictionary of Rhode Island." Unfortunately, Allen often does not acknowledge his sources for specific information. With the passing of the years and further research, some of his information has been proven inaccurate or missing. With those warnings, this is an excellent place to start for SHREVE family information that you can then document for yourself. I found it extremely helpful as a skeleton for my SHREVE research.
