Welcome To Hard Rocks, Arizona

Hard Rocks is shown in the center of the topographic map, bottom map, which is sourced from the United States Geographical Survey map USGS Hard Rocks quad. The nearest major town is First Mesa, AZ.

Hard rocks is located slightly south-west of Pinon between Tuba City and Pinon, and nearly due north of Winslow.

Mining here has a long history going back to the Spanish occupation in the 17th century.

During WWI the mining companies had no use for uranium so they just bagged the ore and stacked it in the played out mine tunnels.

During WWI uranium became useful and many miners were hired to mine the ore.

Navajos worked in those mines, and those Navajo vets returned from the war found the mines to be their only source of income.

This map marks hiking trails which radiate to every direction. Tourists find these trails compelling and the tourist money helps the economy.

We are researching the history of Hard Rocks for those who had their ancestors from here, to learn more about how they lived.

You can help.
